My gosh...just when I thought it was safe to go South, a relative emailed the story of the sinkhole swallowing up a house in Nixa last week!
What are you guys doing to make those things start showing up? Seriously, I never realized that they were that prevalent (2500 in Greene County) down there. A fella would want to be careful if he stepped out at night to relive himself!

Like Old said a lot of sink holes fall in when we have dry weather. I live about 20 minutes from Paul and we are the driest we have been since the 1950's and maybe dryer.

I remember back in the early 80's I was farming the James River bottoms east of Springfield and a sinkhole developed in the spring of the year, it started out about 5 feet in diameter and about 15 deep, when we went to cut the sudan in mid summer it had growen to 30 feet in diameter and about 40 feet deep, it never got any bigger than that. I do remember it was real dry that year.

Hi Walter, 1980 was a very dry year, we were lucky it only lasted one year that dry. This may sould stupid to some, but every since the Gov. built Stocton Lake the summers have changed in Northwest Greene, Southwest Poke and Eastern Dade Countys. This dry spell is not caused by that as it is wide spread. and OK, parts of Kansas, and TX are a lot dryer than we are.

Long years ago I saw a house in Virginia that had started sinking. The first floor window sills were at ground level when I first drove by. The cause was determined to be extremely heavy water use from the well across the street. That well supplied a slaughter house and I guess they were having a dry spell.

"A fella would want to be careful if he stepped out at night to relive himself!" Why, is that what causes them?

Its one of those things that show up when it gets as hot/dry as it has been here lately. Ground water goes down and opens up a place for the dirt to go and then bye bye house etc. Plus this is the cave state so we had to make sure others see why we call it that LOL. Shoot I have 3 on my place plus a small sink hole next to my driveway

I drove by that house as my wife works about 2 blocks from there. Quite a site. One of my co workers almost bought that house when it was on the market about 3 years ago. I live northwest of Springfield and when I bought my place I went down to Planing and Zoneing and they had a map of Greene Co that showed all the sink holes that they know about and it was an eye opener. About 25 within a mile or two of my house. Most people around here just use them to dump their old meth labs into. Couldn't be any harm in that.

Couldn't believe (if I read the article right) that your homeowner's insurance doesn't cover loss if your house drops to the center of the earth.
I guess you would want to make sure you had a good fire going before it fell in.

I know what you mean. Our insurance guy asked me if I wanted earthquake coverage. I asked him wouldn't the house be covered if an earthquake knocked down the house. He said oh no. The coverage was very high and he said it wouldn't cover fondation damage!!! You got to be kidding me. So like you said, in case of an earthquake my house may go up in flames.

Ya, things were getting a little slow down here so we thought we would come up with a new gimmick for the blue hairs to look at. It's worked good so far. Harley
