A friend of mine told me that he always drives his old beater when he goes to look at or buy a tractor. He feels that if the seller sees you in an old junker, he is more likely to bend in his price as compared to dealing with somebody driving a $45000 Duramax or Cummings, etc. Anybody out there go along with this thinking or is he just dreaming?

Well Ill tell you what Re:Vehicle You Drive When B in reply to Pauper Poor, 08-21-2006 06:24:45
Way back in the 70s I had a repair garage, this old guy used to come in on a regular basis. He liked to just talk a lot, when he needed work on his old car a rough looking 49 Dodge, I would take care of it. Seems he had been coming to that same garage since that car was new, I had purchased this business out of the estate of the former owner. I really didnt know that much about that old guy except that I had heard rumors that he was quite wealthy. Now you know I never belived any of it, mainly just cause I had also taken him to his home many times when he had to leave his car, which was more or less a dilapidated old house on the seedy side of town. Now he always paid what he owed with cash and never a complained about the cost. Now I always dismissed all that talk of his riches because of what seemed to be. The old boy passed away one day. Well to my surprise all of the rumors were true. There was a story in the local paper recounting his life story. Seems that the old boy as it turned out owned a good section of the downtown real estate of Seattle. Turns out that he had a shoe factory there producing boots and shoes in the 30s. But when WWII came along his factory had one of the largest contracts to produce shoes and boots for the US fighting forces , that factory produced shoes and boots up till the late 50s solely for the US gov't. But what he was doing with his profits, was buying downtown Seattle real estate then. Now all you people from Wa know what downtown Seattle real estate is worth even when he died in the early 70s. So as once said just never judge a book by its cover. Or what I have learned never judge a person wealth by either where they may live or by the vehicle they drive;)) It may just shock you!

I DONT KNOW, I GUESS IT WORKS BOTH WAYS, MY BEST FRIEND IS WORTH SEVERAL MILLION DOLLARS, I AM DISABLED AND ALWAYS STRUGGLE TO MAKE MY BILLS. MY OLD 400.00 TRUCK WAS DYING AND I WAS MISSING ALOT OF APPOINTMENTS WITH MY SURGEON. MY FRIEND PICKED ME UP IN A BRAND NEW JAGUAR WORTH WAY MORE THAN I OWN ALL TOGETHER.HE TOOK ME TO A USED TRUCK LOT. WE DROVE A FEW, AND SETTLED ON A 99 F350. STICKER PRICE WAS 12,500,MY FRINED OFFERED 9000 CASH AND WITHIN HALF AN HOUR I DROVE AWAY IN THE NICEST TRUCK I HAVE EVER HAD.I MOW THE FRIENDS YARD AND TAKE HIM TO THE AIRPORT AND SUCH WHEN I CAN, TO PAY OFF MY DEBT. MONEY CERTAINLY HELPED ME OUT, IF NOT FOR MY FRIEND I PROBABLY WOULD HAVE ENDED UP PAYING CLOSE TO STICKER, AS I HAD NOTHING TO INFLUENCE THE GUY.

The last new truck I bought I bought over the phone. The dealer owner knew me and I knew him. I had seen the truck before so I knew what it had. He called with his "best" offer and I made mine. He didn't like it but he did find another rebate and called me back two days later, only 800+ miles away, done deal. I have never bought a new tractor and probably never will. I would think that with the low margins on -most- tractors, haggling won't be over much. Do your homework first and then see how he reacts. What you drive probably won't matter if you have your money lined up. I agree with LJL.

I have found that down here the car dealers are real jerks. If we drive in my (older) car, the salesmen basically ignore us or only show us the older junk I wouldn't buy anyway... If we drive my wife's (newer) car we are at least shown the certified pre-owned vehicles and allow us a test-drive every now and then.

Actually, when we moved down here we had my 88 F-150 which was in as-new condition with low miles... anyways we drive up to the dealer to buy a car for my wife, and they ignored us. We specifically asked for a salesman, told them we had a budget of $15k and were ready to buy. Stuck around for 15 minutes while the sales people did nothing but stand around the popcorn machine and BS with each other...

So I called a dealer friend back home, told him I had a $15k budget, he listed the cars that he could sell at that price, we agreed on a car, and it was on the way the next day. He even arranged to have the full amount financed so we could use our down payment $$ to pay the tax when we registered it... I miss small town ND :o(

One of these days we are going to borrow our friend's 04 F250 that is fully loaded and dress up in our best clothes just to see how we are treated...

Funny you should mention that. When I bought my 01 350,I had 5 grand in my pocket in $100 bills.looked at several trucks, on a few lots and found the one I have now.Sales "manager" would budge on the price, ot he amount of my trade in. I pulled out the 5 grand, just for show mind you, and got the truck at my price and what I wantedfor my trade in.I walked out with the 5 grand still in my pocket.

Well, actually you're wrong. Originally, the name was Cummings, and then some relative started into the whiskey business during prohibition and the family changed the name to Cummins. So put that in your correct pipe and smoke it! Just kidding, I hope you were!

The guy in the $45000 duramax is probably broke on making payments he can't afford and wants a tractor for nothing, the guy in the old pickup knows value and probably has more money. The people i know who drive fancy cars and wear

So , who can AFFORD to buy that new tractor in the first place? I drive a 9 year old vehicle (never owned a new one, probably never will). I just can't justify putting out $30,000 - $50,000 for a vehicle (thought $14,000 was bad!). If I ever NEED to buy another vehicle, I'll drive up in whatever I happen to be driving that day and HAGGLE all day long, if I have to - and I'll probably start on the cheapest one on the lot! There are a LOT of good used ones out there with only 120,000 miles or so - don't need new. With tractors - if it ain't IH or Ford - I go right by. Newest tractor I have ever owned is a 1971 - there are plenty of the older ones out there that are still cheap enough.

I'd say a middle of the road veicle might work best. You don't want to drive a total piece of junk because that will make alot of people uncomfortable, and make them feel like they are problably just wasting their time even speaking to you since it appeared you didn't have any money and would want you off their property since your problably just casing the joint while your there looking for something to come back and steal. Your new fancy diesel pickups and whatnot I can see where that might hurt you since it's obvious you have a pretty decent income to even be able to finance a truck like that since the payments alone are $550-$600 a month. I think your friend is right, and I can see sellers definatly getting jelous when you pull in with a vehicle thats nicer than what they have.

Different people would have different theories.
Mine is "Cash talks". I think that if a person comes in and looks and talks as if they could get the haggled price within an hour, sure, I would deal some. But if someone came in and told me they cant afford it, and I felt that I was going to be standing there for an hour trying to help this person out financially then no. I'm a nice guy but not that nice.
I want to see the cash or a sign off it. Sort of like a bank manager, what do you have? Is this going to be a waste of time for me to stand here haggling?
Different sales people will be different but if it was me that were selling, if I thought they can back their words with cash then sure, I'll play the game and dicker some. If I thought I was wasting my time then I would go back to the house in a couple of minutes.

Ever see that old episode of "The Cosby Show" where he went to buy a new car and dressed down and drove and old clunker? It was working until someone recognized him as a Doctor and asked how his wife, the lawyer, was doing. The salesman shelved the deal. The same holds true in life. A person's perception has much to do with the prices they charge and pay.
When I show up somewhere in my 16 year old pickup, and dressing the way I do, people assume that I don't have much money and live in a poor area. While it's not true, it is percieved that way to the casual observer. I believe it's true that people who have more money will pay more money for the same products and services as people who do not have money.

reminds me of the last new car I bought. Was dressed in Jeans and flannel shirt, driving an old beatup station wagon. I had decided either Toyota or subaru. Went to Toyota first and I seemed to be invisible, so I left and went to Subaru got good service, wrote them a 14,000 and some odd check (ouch) and told them I would pick up the car the next day :)

That was 16 yrs ago and it is the last NEW car I will buy. I buy land for the type of money they want for cars now. Making plenty of cars, not making any more land.

I just drive the car usually. Figure we have to agree on the terms before I try to impress em by dragging out the 89 F350 and the rusty trailer. I agree with some of the others. Don't worry about it one way or the other. It will sale when both of you agree on the price, otherwise you both leave with what you came with, no matter what you drive.

This doesn't only apply to tractor buying.

When we go pheasant hunting, the guy with the oldest pickup goes up to ask permission.

There's also a flip side. There's an oil pipeline project going on in my area. Many of the local landowners are griping about the low easements they are receiving. It doesn't help when the pipeline guys drive up in a brand new Cadillac Escalade to offer the easements...

Sounds like of baloney to me! Old wives tale form the depression era! Stuff is worth what the buyer and seller agree to make a sale at. And if having what you drive makes a difference why is it those guys with the $30,000 pickups always trying to borrow $20. bucks from me ;)) It will pay off better to be an obsevent looker and be prepared to substaniate your offer of price with the facts not baloney!

Well, I know for a fact its not an "old wives tale" in at least one instance- with my old wife! Guy was coming to look at a horse so he could trail ride with his daughter on visitation days. Drove up in a black Cad Escalade, with sticker still in the window. As the Mrs. went out to greet him, she said, "I sense a full price sale". He tried (not very hard) to bargain, but ended up paying full price. Course, it was hard for him to hide- He owns an appliance store in Seattle that advertises on TV constantly, and the place is named after him, and we made the connection pretty early in the negotiations. When he came to pick up the horse, had a new pickup and new trailer, which we estimated at 70 grand combined. Guess old Dobbin is on easy street at this point. But I do agree you'll do better looking less prosperous- if for no other reason than your seller won't hate you as much.

Ya we take the '71 f150, throw a bale and a few pigs in the back, bring the kids missing teeth in their chore clothes and go bargain hunting. The Hummer and vette stay here in the climate controlled underground storage with the airplane. Works great, sometimes people just give stuff to us cause we look so poor. Gotta leave the wife home though, or else they want to trade for her. NOT! If someone can afford a $45,000 duramax or the like, why try to con some one out of a $100 or two. I make an offer, they either take it or they dont, if not well that was my offer and it was their tractor. Being straight up gets you through life a little harder maybe, but a there something about going through life honest and not rich.

YUP. My wife loves to garage shop, she has learned to drive the 20 year old Volvo instead of the 4 year old BMW. Seems the individuals running the sales are more flexible when she drives the older vehicle. And believe me when I say they both look absolutely new, just the Volvo doesn't flaunt it.

Friends father does the same scam. Tells stories on how poor he is, (he has lots of cash), drives an old clunker to the tag sale or sale, how his wife died of cancer etc. It seems to work with rich people, who dont care what they get for what they sell. Me, I would throw him off the property after I told him the price was firm.

Exactly, the truck I drive listed for $29,400. I could have included a whole bunch of options and then the price would have been closer to that $40,000 mark and wouldn't have made the truck one bit more useable or comfortable.
