For quite some time now , the PTO size on a tractor has been made standard. I"m sure some people on this board remember the small PTO shafts on the older John Deere tractors. Besides John Deere , did any other brand tractor have the small PTO shaft? Can anyone recall any of the old implements which were used on the small PTO shafts?

Our 1956 Ford 640 has the small shaft. The pulley drive we have, hooks directly to it. We also have the original Ford adapter which bolts on to the differential case. This adapter extends the shaft and resizes it so that it can be used on standard PTO equipment. I don't ever remember using the pulley drive, which was probably purchased when we bought a Ford 9N. The 640 replaced the 9N. We had a belted corn sheller but I can only remember it being used on the Farmall H, and that last happened in the real early 50's.

My Dad had a 1940 JD B with the small shaft. We just used the cheap adapter that fit in like a bushing to fill in the gap.

AC Model B has a small shaft. We don't worry about it because we use the tractor with it's belly mower, not for p.t.o. work.

My 1941 Farmall H has the small shaft. I may keep it that way cause it won't be used for any pto work anymore. You just don't see them to often on a Farmall

Dad, who with Grand-dad was an IH dealer, told me that Ih standardized their PTO's in 1941. Some of the '39-early '41 tractors got changed over by dealers, but some didn't. Dad always warned me that, before buying a pre-'41 H, check the PTO size...and double-check it on a '41, because some came out with the smaller PTO, and some came with the "standardized" PTO.

So I only know what I've been told...and that only applies to Farmalls.

Case SC has the smaller shaft. The belt pulley for Fords used the smaller shaft.

I think almost all the companys at one time had at least one tractor with the smaller ones. I know that JD, Allis, Farmall and ford had them and probably a good number of others.

My 42 H had the smaller shaft when I got it... I swapped it out for the standard size. My F12 and F14 have the small shaft as well.

My 1940 Farmall H has the small shaft, but a 1940 Farmall M would have the large shaft. Those were the days before anything was standardized.

All the first Fords--8N,9N etc. The cheap little adapter worked for a while, then fell apart.
