Is there a rule of thum or schedule for the size of reservoir for a 11 or 12 gal per min pump. Or I guess the question is how do you know what size reservoir to use on a certain gpm pump? Thanks for any information in advance

For industrial uses, where the machine is running two or even three shifts, I think the recommendation is three times the pump capacity. They also use oil coolers when necessary. For mobile machinery and agricultural applications, you can easily get away with a tank equal to the pump capacity. I have been using ten gallons in a wood splitter with a thirteen gpm PTO pump for over fifteen years with no problems. The tank came out of a bulldozer and has enough volume for twenty gallons if I ever change to a bigger pump.

Yes there is; Now here is where it gets tricky. Cycle time (the number of times the actuator is to function in a given amount of time) enters into the answer. Example: A hydraulic motor will require a larger reservoir than a double acting cylinder. Tell me what you have in mind. Also a given rule is reservoir should be 2-1/2 to 3 times pump flow. I can give you examples where that is too large and also applications where it is way too small. J.

I will be using a long model 1199a 3pt hitch backhoe attachment. from what I understand it will require a 12 gpm pump driven by pto to run it. Operating time will be minimal per application(few hours).

Thanks,
