To swap a 460 in a 89 F350 with a 5spd manual transmission to a diesel motor of the same age? The 460 is getting a little tired and was thinking about replacing instead of rebuilding. Any opinions?

Thanks for keeping me on the right track. Sounds like a little more than I want to tackle for a work truck.

If your 89 F350 is in real nice shape do a search for Fordcummins.com. They make kits to make the kind of swap you are thinking of.

I have the exact same truck sitting here and the 460 in mine is using oil now. I am planning on putting a rebuilt 460 back in it. I have one on the engine stand right now that is rebuilt ready to go in soon. Swapping in a diesel would be a lot of work with very little to no gain. If you want more power from the 460 do a little head work, exhaust system and rebuild it and it will be good to go for another 15 years. Diesel swap would not be cost effective. It would be farther ahead to sell the truck and buy a diesel if that is what you really want. Good luck.

Bolt in a 6V-53 with an adapter plate.

i think it would be quite a job, aside fron the wiring harness differences, fuel system with return lines, water separaters, ecm modules, trans and rear end ratios, you would have to wire up for the glow plugs too. be a lot cheaper and faster to get a remanufactured long block 460 asembly and drop er in.

Don't forget you will have to get a different Transmision, they won't interchange between engines.

If you have the Diesel and don't have to buy one, it would be cheaper then to fix the 460 and it would take less time, go fur-it....
