Can get a 15 kw generator from work, just for hauling away, only problem is the engine is junk. Thought about trying to find a four cyl diesel engine of some type. Needs to run 1800 rpm i think. Gen is direct mounted to the engine now. Maybe make a plate and bering and couple it with a felx coupler? Any thoughts or should I just forget it? Any ideas on cheap diesel engines?

Just to throw out the idea...

Gasoline engine converted to run on propane? BIL had a 5kw plumbed to a 420# tank that would probably power him for months.

Advantage over diesel and gasoline is propane doesn't go bad during storage. I would size the tank big though, so you don't have to worry about refilling if there's a major event like a catastrophic hurricane / ice-storm / etc that has a wide area impacted...since ya can't exactly go and get some propane in a jerry can.

Use a belt guard and a front bearing for pto or?

>Link

>Link They make bellhousing adapters from anything to anything. If you can find a 30-40HP engine, they make a belhousing plate to bolt them together.

Both Ideas are good, just depends on what you have and your needs.IF you can spare a tractor then maybe go the PTO idea,BUT if you have any hi-tech Electronics (do not repeat do not)Try Loum's idea of running you engine less than PTO rated speed.Your Governor won't react good enough to maintain your cycles.(60Cycles are more important than maintaining 120 volts) I have 4 PTO units and 1 Engine unit and they have run anywhere from Couple Hrs.to 2 weeks non stop, but then they may set a year and not be needed. IF it is a good Gen.and you can find a cheap Diesel go that route.Good Luck with what ever you decide.

I would repower it with a small diesel, yes it is an extra engine to maintain but a diesl will start if it sets for a while, gas will gum up and get stale, diesl is safer to store. I have a PTO generator which I have to use to often it seems. And when the power is out for 8 to 40 hours it ties up my tractor, so that I can't use the loader during that time. If you made it PTO depending on the size of your tractor, for a full 15KW you only need about 30 HP, I would try to gear so that I wasn't at full PTO speed to run it 2/3 trottle would be a lot nicer on the tractor.

I agree with davpal. Make it into a PTO generator for your tractor.

Build a trailer and use it as a pto driven generator for your tractor. I have been thinking about buying a tractor pto generator for my 9n for a while now. That way you don't have to worry about maintaining another engine for the generator. Just an idea.
