I need advice. I have a skunk that has gotten down inside a steel garbage can that is empty in my barn. It is used to store cat food, but the bag was almost empty. Now the problem is it can't get back out because it is to far in the bottom to pull itself out. I really don't want this thing to spray, because all of our horse tack is right around it and I don't want it ruined. (5 sadles and a driving harness) If there is any way that you guys can think of to get this critter out alive, I'd do that and then dispose of it outside the barn. I got one last week with the .243 and that worked real well. Instant death, no spray.
I'm need'n advice! I'll be gone most of the day, but I'm guess'n that skunk will still be there when I get home and I'll still have to deal with it. Thanks

A long rope around can and slowly pull it over from a safe distance and he will run off .

Thanks for the opinions. The skunk was brought out with success. We piled two square bales next to the the can in a V shape, tied a long rope to the handle, pulled the can over at a 45 degree angle on the bales, and the skunk trotted out and outside he went. As luck would have it, he did manage to go in the only place I couldn't get a safe shot at him, so his life was spared tonight. I'm still hunting that rascal though, and no cat food will be left in the barn until I get him.

lots of posts in the archives on this subject, skunks are a lot of fun unless its your skunk

I was trapping squirrels and accidently live trapped a skunk (got 5 more afterwards but thats a different story)

skunks are pretty reasonable unless you rile them, move REAL slow, watch for stomping front feet or a raised tail, stop and let him relax if you see either action, I moved all of mine without incident

around dusk, I would VERY slowly cover the trash can with an old thick blanket, let him settle down for a while and get used to that, once the blanket is in place the smell will be contained

SLOWLY carry the can outside and place downwind away from the house, let the can sit for a while so the critter can relax

if you don"t want to keep him as a pet, I recommend 2 oz of #6 applied with Remington 870 or your own preference

5 lbs. of dry ice should displace enough oxygen to do him in.

Maybe you can sneak in there and use a long stick to tip the can over away from you so he can walk out on his own. If he doesn't see you there he might just walk away. Put a radio out there to get him used to noise and he might not even notice you there. Good luck. I have been sprayed point blank before. It is not fun.

You can most likely put the top on the can and move the skunk without it spraying. Most times a skunk will only spray if it can see it's target. Just put the lid on and move it slowly outside.

You could also put the top on the can and stick a hose from an exhaust pipe in the can. Many of the animal control people use CO2 in a kill chamber. The exhaust will also work.
