The EPA has put the iron thumb on most plating operations in this country. I did a lot of calling, letter writing and research in the early 90s (pre-internet days) and put numbers together. At that time it would have taken close to 3/4 million dollars to get permitted, build, stock and get started up in chroming. Then constant reporting, monitoring and of course constant cradle to grave enviromental liability and it's inherant costs. Thats why I went to stainless fabrication. China and Mexico do a lot of plating but then again they don't think twice about dumping the waste in the river.

I imagine small chrome shops have fallen victim to the EPA regs.

Mostly changing tastes. At one time, cars had chrome everything, and then chrome went out of favor, and new cars had very little chrome. Plastic bumpers that would meet crash standards were a biggy.
