Just wondering what impresses ya'll most about other "professionals" that you have do work for you. Reason I ask is something a customer told Dad Friday. We've known the guy for nearly 6 years, back to when he was a store manager at our local NAPA. He has called us to do several jobs since being with the new company, even though they have been using another independent mechanic company almost exclusively for years. Long story short he/they have been impressed not only with the the quality of the work we've done for them but also the fact that we really do work and don't goof off and take all day to do half a days work. The thing that suprised me more than anything though was when he told dad, basically, that before he ever saw us actually work he was already impressed with our work. Being the manager of the NAPA he said that he had always noticed we very rarely returned parts. Knowing other individuals in the same line of work he said they routinely bought and returned parts, often multiple times. So, in his eyes, if a man bought the parts he really needed the first time and didn't spend more time buying and returning parts he didn't need in a search of the ones he did, then that man must know what he's doing...and to him that was impressive. I've alway been told there's nothing more powerful than a first impression. Something like this just goes to show that you never know what you do that someone is gonna be impressed by, so always strive to do your best and make a good impression..... ..As a final note after Friday the other indpendent is out the door and we have a new account.

One thing that impresses me is a job that is finished on time. If it is going to take a week, tell me.. Nothing makes a customer madder than not having the job done from promised. My business partner & I have always had disputes on this. He likes to keep telling a customer "Tomorrow", day after day, & it creates a lot of tension & ill will. On the other hand, I prefer to add a little time in, in case I need to order parts, or run into a problem. If I am going to be late on a job, I prefer to call them, & explain, before they call me. Usually, once you explain what the status is, they are OK with it...

Good to hear that there are still good people out there!

Around here in AZ, every time I have work done on my car it comes back worse than when I brought it in. Case in point: went in for a wheel alignment, they took the wheels off and cross-threaded the lug nuts... found this out when I got home. Limped it back and asked them to fix it. They ground half the heads off the studs to get them in and also cut away half of my brake shield! So I had to re-do their work anyway.

It makes it difficult when you are smart enough to realize when someone is screwing up the work your having done. I've decided that most of the time the labor cost will buy me the tools to do it myself - and I'll have the tools when I'm done. If it doesn't work that way, I rent the tools.

Let's get back to the old days where people put in an honest day's work for a day's pay!

The one guy that impresses me the most is my parts man. 8 times out of 10 he doesnt use a book or a computer to look up the parts I need.Hes an older gentleman who has owned this same store for 40 some odd years. He has the the oldest building in town, not too many changes to it since then with exception to a few new coats of paint on the inside, maybe a new tile floor, but the one thats in there is old,he did have A/C put in but that was back in the early 80s.He did add on about 25 years ago for his machine shop.I remeber Dad ging to him for parts,so I do to.Whuile the chain stores are only 5 minutes away,he always has the most customers.

I have been told what impressed some of my customers in the past have been: I took the time to write down the radio station presets and reset the radio(no i dont charge for that), The lady was impressed she said after spending 600 bucks i dont have to fiddle with that. She asked how I did all the work i did without disconnecting the battery i said i ddi disconnect it i just reset the radio presets. I try not to mess with seats etc if i can help it. And I installed some radio equipment wig wag lights backup alarm etc etc on a pickup the guy actually looked under the dash and said "wow doesnt even look like you were in there. I said htanks 99.9 percent of customers wont check your work wont stick their feet up in the air, lay on the seat backwards and check your wiring you do under the dash but i still make everthing neat, and zip strip it up out of the way. Also i try to make sure to solder all joints with 2 pieces of shirnk wrap (right size and one size to go over it. Most interiors shouldnt need that but i try to do everything the right way. I hate and detest scotch locks or butt connectors, even seen factorys use scotch locks, not on my vehicles.

Speaking of radios, I took my 1985 Monte Carlo in for some warranty work when it was new. When I went to pick it up, whoever had taken it for a test drive had switched the radio station to some loud rock station. It still sticks in my mind, if you are going for a test drive, shouldn't you keep the radio off so you can hear if there is a problem?

Ever seen were a marine mechanic loaded down the wiring harness on a boat with scotch locks. One nightmare for sure. I got my career started out werk’in on door to door delivery trucks (milk) it wuz a never ending process removing scotch locks that thy body manufacture must have used to wire the whole truck up with. When I wuz into boat’in and went to buy a new one used as far as that goes, if I saw one scotch lock I walked away. Impressed, sure, hate and detest now thats 2 nice a werd to use (!$%#&%$!)

Here's a photo of one of the ugly critters:

Link loading="auto" style="width:auto;height:auto" alt="Third Party Image">">Link

To connect a pair of wires, the slotted metal tab in the center is squeezed down into the wires, where it cuts through the insulation, and then forms a connection between the wires UNTIL corrosion sets in!

I have found that these can work good IF right after you put it on to encase the whole lock and wires in a " glob " of silicone sealent.

Now I see why ya'll dislike them so much.
Looks like a terrible way to connect wires.
I would think twist and tape would work better.

Thanks.

This might not be quite what you are looking for but what impresses me most is a good backhoe operator. To me, it's just unbelievable what a good operator can do. The guy I hire is in his 70's and can eithr work quickly or if the job requires close, fine work, he uses that bucket like a woman's hands in her flower bed.

I was in a meeting once where the question came up about the greatest invention of all time. The usual stuff was thrown out--computers, airplanes, etc. but I said "Backhoes!" Well, of course this bunch looked at me like I had escaped from the asylum. When they wanted to know why, I told them that the next time they had a project that required a lot of digging, to just grab the pick and shovel and go at it!

I work in the electronics field. These days I call it SWAPTRONICS. No one knows how to troubleshoot a problem. Why troubleshoot when you can swap a new part in and see. I think the car dealers do this because it's your dime not thiers. I'm impressed with someone who actaully knows something theses days. I tell when I am being bullshi**ed real quick.

Craig --- your absolutely right --- When I attended Computer Electronics College, that's what they taught you, swap the boards out, and keep swapping till it works, I said -- no way, so after graduation, I attended an Air Craft Avionics School, Now that Course taught you to trouble shoot the problem and replace the component(s), I think the reason for this is because the boards were too expensive to swap out... any way -- that gave me the training I needed, and been happy ever sence --- helping others.

Just goes to show how the worlds changed in the last 50 years. I remember growing up on a farm in Indiana on the mid 50"s through 65 that people always did the job and did it right the first time with the very odd times when there would be a mistake. Today, you just expect to have to take your vehicle(tractor or auto) back two or three times to get it done right. I think we need to return to some of the old ways, (quality beats quantity) every time. God Bless. Bob Da. (La)

It didn"t take me too long after getting and running the tire service truck to figure out that returning to redo a job was a money loser. Of course I still have the work ethic that says I can"t charge someone for redoing my mistake. Guess I"ll never be rich but I sleep good at night. I have learned in business that in the long run I want the custermers that want a job done right the first time with quality parts and willing to pay a little extra. I let the price shoppers go to Walmart and happy they are there.
