I downloaded Pitstop Optimizer the other day. It scanned and listed changes that would speed up my computer. The question I have is, are these programs realy any good, is it worth paying for or are there things I can get for free that will help me tweek performance?

A few freebie programs that are safe and will do many of the things the retail optimizers do are:

Spybot S&D (besides anti-spyware it has some tweak tools included)

Advanced WindowsCare (system optimizer)

TweakNow RegCleaner Std.

CCleaner (CrapCleaner) and Internet Sweeper (Emory Info Eng.)

MS Bootvis - for slow boot-up times (know what you're doing if you run this one!)

Google their names and you should be able to find download sites.

Also limit the number of programs running in the background - HP Digital Imaging Monitor that comes with many HP printers is a real resource hog. Check your anti-virus/spybot/firewall software settings. Not suggesting you disable them, but play with the settings to see if they are creating issues.

Here is a piece I wrote for another set of forums.
If your computer is running slower than it used to,
then go thru these procedures to get it back up to speed.
Just go to the link below and read about it.

Well Im a huge computer geek, and I will tell you if it"s still the program it does work. When I lived in town and the optimizer was free I downloaded it, and my speed more than doubled. I had cable internet and my speed was 1.5 mb, and it went to around 4 mb. I havent done it on this computer because im in the country now, and i have dsl. But yes that program worked well for me when I had cable internet. You can go to speedguide.net for some free patches for broadband.
