While triming grass along a fenceline to-day, I holed an 11.2x24 tire on our mfwd Ford. Called my tire guy and he had 2 11.2x24 in stock. Darned if they aren't Chinese and imported by Galaxy Tire which was formed by Galaxy Tire & Wheel from Boston Mass. and Dynamic Tire from Toronto. What are you gonna do when you're looking at under $6.00 soys ----- $257 as opposed to over $400 for Goodyear or Firestone!

Sorry if I ruffled a few feathers, but I guess the point I was trying to make is that, as a farmer, I have to TAKE world prices for my products, so I can only hope to BUY my inputs at the lowest price possible in order to survive. I can't hope to survive any other way. Ask Allan from NB what it's like to survive in the real world of farming to-day! He went through the wringer in the eighties.
BTW, I'm not American, but a Canadian full time farmer.

maybe i should keep out of this but i stongly don't like it when somebody says anybody can make a good tire. good people can make mistakes and companys do try to cut corners sometimes. i worked near to 16 years at the firestone tire&rubber co plant in des moines ia. my dad and three uncles worked there. and yes i was a union member. i didn't build tires tires, i wasn't fast and good with my hands. i was a janitor and worked in receiving unloading trucks and box cars. at one time john deer was buying firestone tires and they wouldn't take them unless they were made in des moines. des moines used to be the best plant and best workers. i worked there from 1961 to 1980. i retired on dissabilty, hurt on the job in 1976. i got out before all the nasty stuff started and the sale. at that time firestone owened one third of bridgesone. there is nothing simple about building good tires. i never had any trouble driving my 99 dodge truck on the firestone wilderness tires that ford was having all the trouble with and so does my son with his 98 dodge truck 4X4. charley.

The Hankook tires were on the Marmon when I bought the truck, I would not even considered buying them to put on a truck, now after the episode that I had with the Hankook dealer, I am further convinced to stick with the U S A brands

You guys really are great American heroes. You fuss about some tool you brought that breaks or something cheap that Wal-Mart or harbor freight sells that's not up to US standards and then go buy Cheap tires made in china. And you wouldn't kidd me would you? I just brought a set of Firestones 151 4 ply 12.4x38 and they weren't$400.00 they cost$240.00 each and tubes for $20.00 each. If nobody buys the cheap stuff, tools, tires, whatever they won't keep sending it over here. It would just pile up on the docks. Gees, please wave the American flag and sing God bless America while you're mounting those chinese tires, it might ease you consience
and make the American worker feel better when he's looking for another job that going to pay less, bless you heart. Don

Bought two of the same size a year ago. Firestone, $280 each with tube and tax -- Brand name dealer is often your best source.

Yesterday two of my Hankoook tires on my Marmon Road tractor had problems, one of the treads was coming off, it was still 9/16 deep. The dealer wouldnot prorate the tire wear on a new one. The other had a small nail in it and the dealer said the tire was not repairable. I bought a used tire to replace the one with tread coming off at another tire shop. The one with the small nail problem was a bad valve stem, the nail was not in to the tire far enough to cause the leak, I have had my fill of the HANKOOK Chinese tires.

Tires are so low tech, anyone can make good tires. I know this is contrary to the Union mantra uttered by either the URW or the USW but it's true and there's no need to pay Union scale for TIRES!

Firestone's no tech tires cost a few lives not long ago. They ordered a shorter cure time in the mold over union objections to speed up production.

It all has to do with application. I would rarely advise putting imported tires on a tractor that pulls hard. But on a chore tractor or a smaller one I use them and bave never been dissappointed. I hate to do it and would love to be USA only but not in the real world.

Ed, if you are willing to pay a little more then I am thrilled to sell you a USA made tire. Good for you. And yes there are USA made tires, sometimes you have to look a little to find it. Which is also why I try really hard to avoid Walmart whose motto should be, "Saving the Chinese economy one USA job at a time".
