BP had a leak in one of their tankers and spilled a quart of oil. So the price of oil will now go up to $5.00 a gallon. I remember when gas was $.25 a gallon and service stations gave away gifts to get customers plus gave service. They also would have a new auto they would give away if you were the lucky customer. When the price gets high enough that alternatives are available the oil companies will be asking for a bail out (not).

Much as I hate to say it, these high prices may be a good thing . . . we've been aware for years that we are running out of the old-fashoned oil-well oil (I make this distinction because there are billions of gallons of oil tied up in the Canadian tar sands), but have never made any real effort to slow consumption or develop alternatives, because these things are too costly compared to gasoline. Maybe the high cost of gas will make the alternatives competitive and we will eventually be able to to lower the price of crude oil.
I hear that there are soon to be available kits for running non-e85 cars on e85.

You guys are funny. Post like this give me a good laugh.

Why is it that you think the oil companies set the price for oil; gas; and diesel????? ?????

The price is set on the stock market by the buyers and not the sellers and that price is driven by supply and demand.
As long as the soccer moms keep driving their SUV's and 4 door 1 tons to the grocery demand will stay high so gas prices will keep going up.

Going to dream a little and put myself in a top position at BP. Lets see if I don't fix my line the EPA is going to be on me and if I shut it down to repair I will lose the revenue from a lot of oil. Wait I got it,will spread the word that the line will be down, don't say how long and when it gets the price up I can make most of my lost revenue up with the price increase while my other oil is cut off. Then when I get the line fixed I can sell that oil at the higher price, cover all my expenses and have a nice profit. Can't lose just waiting on the big bonus. Someone better wake me up.

Dave, let's dream just a bit more, how about if we tell everybody we have a leak and will have to shut down for repairs, and then when the price is up to where we want it, we will start pumping again. Won't have to recover the cost of repairs because we didn't make any, there was nothing wrong to start with.

I worked at a Shell station in Wenatchee WA in the 50s. Pumped a lot of gas at .17/.19. Premium was .23. We always ask, fill it with premium? Check the water and oil? (We always cleaned windows and mirrors). How are the tires? Boss always ask, did you look at the belts etc? Had a state requirement that we could only charge so much over cost. Not sure what it was. Now in MN you cant sell LESS than 8 cents over cost. Big fines. Bob

Most every state has a law like that now. It is the only thing that keeps mom and pop stores in business.

A big company like Pilot or Racetrac comes to town. Since they have stores in other towns and even other states they sell gas for cost. Will not be long before every mom and pop store would be out of business because they can not compete with only one store. As soon as the small stations are out of business the big guys can charge what they want because of no competition.

Yea, we have a law that a retailer cannot sell below cost plus a certain markup (not sure how much). We don't see companies charged with that crime much. LOL

Yep the oil companys are putting the screws to us big time and we can't do much about it. Guess if every body could do like I do and not drive but once or twice a week it might help but then most people have to drive to work. I'm sure glad I don't have to do that any more but it would be nice if I could also afford to fill up once in a while also LOL. And they keep saying its not going to hurt the inflation rate. If it keeps up we may end up in a depression yet

Hey Old; My farm is 35 miles one way from home. If I had my way we would build out there. I used to drive out every day, now I go only when I need to and sometimes camp out there for a few days. (not really roughing it, nice 5th wheel with air and all). Maybe I should sell it and all the equipment and get a job. I have retired twice and maybe a third time I would have enough to live on. lol Bob

Maybe the work place to go to a four day week or something to that order to reduce travel. I travel over 40 miles each way daily. I do have an economy car though and did carpool most of the last 12 months.

I wonder how high the price has to get before we get an alternative fuel. Congress keeps telling us they are investigating these prices but I don't hear any results of the investigations. I think Brazile has had ethonal for years, why can't the USA change over.

We are already giving the oil companies billions in free royalties on Federal land.
Record profits and tax / royalty breaks, what a deal.

A letter to the presedent..... .....

Hey "W" hows your portfolio doing? Got any money in oil? Making any money?

Is it true the oil companies are only making all this money to help out the pensioners that hold their stock?

Well, there certainly is a connection to government...like on the federal, state, and local levels. What has any one of them done to bring you, your family, your neighbors and friends one single drop of oil? Pumped it out of the ground? Nope. Refined it? Nope? Delivered it? Nope? Name one single thing. Just one, other than tax the crap out of it for having done...not a single thing.

I've heard all kinds of politicians saying that those micro cars were killing them because get such incredible milage, rarely stop at the pumps, and use the roads, but don't bring in enough taxes to maintain the roads...taxes gotta go up somewhere to do that. They must've forgotten that they'd said that, because later said that we Americans have to cut back on our consumption because its at an all time high. So, taxes didn't go down, but consumption's at an all time high. Hmm? Who's making the windfall? Or at least one of the players making the windfall?

Time was that if a business didn't do their maintenance and it caused a breakdown, they had to bear the loss of income. Now it seems that same thing spells profit!
