I have a 1951 8N I just installed a new clutch disc, pressure plate,
TO bearing, pilot bearing, clutch release springs, cluth release hub and
clutch release arm kit. Everything new I put it all back together only to find out I now have a clutch that won't disengage. Found after splitting tractor there wasn't anything wrong with the old clutch but it didn't have any adjustment left so therefore I thought it was the clutch but old parts all look to be in excellent shape. But replaced everything anyway but things are now not working at all tractor will move forward if in gear but can't get the clutch to disengage. I have had it apart twice and everything is in the right place doesn't make any sense the flywheel has .875 thousanths left minimum is .855 ths. Tried every adjustment possible and nothing has worked so far.Anyone ran into this before??
Thanks in advance Clay

I helped my father on a 2N(i believe) years ago. Had same thing happen. took apart several times. Finallly we compared the new clutch disc to the old. New one had a hub in the center on both sides of the disc. old one didn't. We ground off the projection and clutch worked fine when tractor was put back together.

Thanks for the reply The clutch plates look Identical. Don't know whats going on but it sure is weird. I've checked everything twice and everything looks good mostly all parts were replaced. I guess the next step is to try what Kansas suggested and put some spacers in between the pressure plate and flywheel,
Thanks again for your reply
Clay

Where did you get the parts? I bought a rebuilt clutch and pressure plate last winter on a tractor I waw working on and the fingers on the pressure plate never came out to where the height of the old one when laying on the bench, I called the place where I got it from and they were going to send me a replacement but they opened the box and found the same thing I did so they called the rebuilder and l;o and behold to save box space they put bolts in the pressure plate to collapse it. I removed the bolts and everything came back to normal.

Thanks for the reply!
I thought that might be the case also but the new one checked out to be OK. So I think the thing I will do is put some washers between the pressure plate and flywheel it's weird everything checks out but won't disengae.
Thanks Again for the Reply

My first guess is that you've got the plate in backwards, but you sure sound like you know what you're doing so.....my next guess is that the adjustment on the fingers on the clutch are not in correct adjustment---I've only had this happen once....he's my story...a 6 cylinder ford gas engine on a new holland stackwagon....this guy overhauled it, and put in a new clutch and pressure plate...wouldn't relase...when you looked at it thru the inspection hole...the arms on the pressure plate were out (torwards the transmission a longways)...I thought he had put the plate in backwards...pulled the trans. and everything was right....so I'm thinking wrong pressure plate...I go see him...this guy is a top notch mechanic...he tells me...if there are no adjustments (ie...bolts on the pressure plate...to make adjustments ....these would change the relationship as to where the fingers on the clutch are when it is in the released positon...) then you can use an old mechanics trick...and put so spacers between the pressure plate and the flywheel....sounds crazy I thought...I put 2 5/16ths flat washers under each bolt (between the flywheel and the pressure plate) this moved the fingers of the clutch IN...and then it would release...its been that way for 2 or 3 years and works just fine. You don't have to even pull anything apart if you can get to it...loosen the pressure plate bolts...install the flat washers...retighten and see what happens... I don't know anything about your tractor, so I don't know if you can do it like this, but based on my experience, I sure wonder if maybe this is what you've got going on. Good Luck.

Hey Kansas
Thanks for the reply. The clutch plate is facing the right way long side towards tranny right. Thats a good idea to put washers between the pressure plate and flywheel I think that will be my next move everything else has checked out OK! Nothing is slipping and I have the tractor split and can see the TO bearing moving out about an inch. So your right it only makes sense to do some spacing behind the PP. Thanks Again for the good advice!!

I`m with old . Check to see if the disc is in backwards , I did it one time , the hub is longer on one side than the other .

You didn't by chance put the disc in backwards did you. I can't say it would make a differance on your tractor but I know in a chev pickup it sure does and if in back wards it will not release.

Re: Clutch disc thickness? in reply to Clay Colo, 08-07-2006 20:23:40

I'm into ford Flathead v8s and some of the remanufactured discs are too thick for the pressure plate to release. Check your thickness against the specs
