I went to the Living History and Antique Equipment Show in my hometown, Franklin Grove, IL today. I walked around for an hour and then sat down and shot the bull with some old gents for about an hour and a half. After that, I found an official and asked if I could volunteer anywhere, because I knew this club was hurting for young folks. Well, 10 minutes later I was up on top of a rack pitching wheat bundles into a threshing machine powered by a steam engine! It was hot, dirty, noisy, and I loved it! I plan on going back tomorrow morning and helping again. The site's only 2 or 3 miles from my house. I also plan on attending the Sycamore Power Show in Sycamore, IL, and the Heritage Days in Rochelle.

Heritage Days is a very small show, they might have a dozen or so tractors, and quite a few small engines. I think the car show is the main attraction there. I went two years ago and there wasn't much to see. I might take my Eclipse reel mowers and a couple antique Briggs and stratton engines there. I'm sure they wouldn't mind having a few more exhibitors : )

Remember boys! dont let this vast amount of knowledge and experience go away. If you have the time try to interact and start programs with your local schools. Once a year myself and 2-3 of my best men from my construction co. are guest speakers at 2 local high schools, we talk to students about road work and municipal projects, free of charge. Although im not as old as you guys, the knowledge and exp. you guys hold is invaluable and can never be replaced and should be shared with others. Give it a try and you will find how may will listen. Thanks and GOOD JOB!

There's something a lot of us can do: historical societies never have enough information, and they love to have oral histories, just the kind of chewing the fat with the old geezers (us old geezers) mentioned above. Often having records of how the old machinery and hardware was used, or the old farm work was done, is as valuable to them as the machinery.

BRAVO... Good for you... It's good that there are folks out there that still appreciate the toil and sweat that went into making this country what it is. I say that like it's a good thing. Anyway, I am with you. The old stuff is neat and as long as I don't have to make a living using it. I like to play. Enjoy the simple things
