I sold and installed pools for 20 years and can tell you the only way to find a leak is to swim under water and look at every square inch of the bottom. I'll bet you find a toenail cut. the place where you see water on the outside has nothing to do with the location of the leak. Water will travel in the direction of least resistance and most of the time that is down. It will follow the track around the outside and maybe show a wet spot on the opposite side. A pool will evaporate 1/4 to 1/2 inch on a hot dry summer day and maybe a little more if it gets pretty cool at night. If you see fog above the pool first thing in the morning that is your water leaving. As far as the food colouring, if you find a suspect place you can try it there and if leaking you can see it going out, but don't expect to put some red food colouring in the pool and it going straight to the leak. The first thing to do is put a piece of tape exactly at the water line and check it again in 24 hours to see if it really is leaking and if it is put a new piece of tape and the turn the pump off and don't let anyone in the pool and then chech it again in 24 hours. A lot of time the water loss is caused by a worn out multi-port valve gasket, which is a cheap fix. Hope this helps. I'll try to answer any questions you ask, Later, Nat

Just an idea, but you could always just let it go down until it stabilizes - then that should be about the level of the hole....

You will need to get right next to the botton with a diving face plate, and check every inch of the bottom, and even the sides. If you suspect a hole take some food coloring in some kind squart bottle, and squirt it at the possible hole area. If there is a hole the food coloring will be sucked out. Stan

Jak....I have a concrete (gunite) in ground pool (16 X 32) and have been maintaining it for 10 years or so. Every year when it gets this hot I have to add water due to evaperation..... ...it was near 100 degrees today..... cattle water was low to.....yep....had to add water to the pool.....

I guess what I'm trying to say is although I can't explain why you have the puddle of water, adding an inch a day this time of year is not abnormal. Heat and wind use water.

Before you spend a bunch of money I suggest you wait another 3 or 4 weeks and the air and water temps will cool. If your still adding water in September then you might have reason to be concerned.

As far as the puddle, you got any kids doing cannon balls?
