Aloha, Does a forklift LP tank have a 12 year life span like the bbq lp tank?? Does it have to be a certain color? I went to fill my lp bbq tank at the local gas dealer and he said that the next time I come to fill my bbq tank, it has to be a white, white color or they will not fill it. When I bought my bbq tank, it was an off white color but still white. Now I have to paint it a white, white color and was wondering what the next law will be. No BBQ tank??? LOL

Mahalo,

In the late 50s (early 60s?) lived in trailers in NM and Cal (29 foot at first, the a 45; that was real space!) propane bottles (remember the two on the front, mounted on the hitch?) were always silver or white. No one ever asked about age in those days, if they didn't leak noticeably you were in business.

In the past here in Texas I recall the tanks were supposed to be either white or silver. The reasoning was if the tank was a dark color it could absorb heat causing the fuel to expand and the valve to release the excess pressure. I also have a tank that is off white and it's never been an issue, but then it depends on the dealer I suppose. He does look at the date on the tank each time though, seems like at 12 years of age it has to be re-certified.
My guess would be your guy that filled your BBQ tank either just returned from a training class, just graduated and is new, or was just inspected and is doing it all by the book for a while. Easy solution, rattle can some white paint on it and forget it.

I just bought a new forlift lp tank last year and it was off white colored. I have seen many of them that were silver colored though. I don't see where it would be a big deal. I guess it is up to the guys that fill them and take your 15 bucks. Later..

Aloha Davpal, No Dave, the BBQ tank had to be a white, white color. I don't know if the lp tank for the forklift has to be a certain color and was wondering if it was only good for 12 years like a bbq tank. TIA

Here in MN tanks 30 & larger (BBQ tank is a 20) do not need to meet the same types of requirements. But, they do have to pass a visual inspection - that they look good, valves are working. More relaxed, common sense.

On the 20 size, never heard of the pure white deal, but the 12 year thing is here, as well as the opt (??? got the right 3 letters) valve.
