starter wiring on f350 pickup

I know this truck isn't a tractor but I'm having a dang time finding the problem, so I thought I would post here.

I have a f350 pu 1971. The ignition wiring is shorted somewhere. I put new wiring for a pushbutton to crank the engine over and it would run with the key in the 'run' position, even though the key will not turn the engine over when turned far clockwise. After running fine for a few weeks, now the enginge will turn over kick on when i push the starter b ut not keep running. I replaced the ignition switch.

Since this truck only stays on my farm, I would like to know how to rig a toggle switch for a 'run' or motor on position to use with my push button starter. Is there a simple way to do this?

thanks

wallyb

Sounds like the ignition resistor wire to the coil has gone bad. The reason it runs with the starter engaged is the fact that the ignition bypass wire from the solenoid is feeding the coil till you turn the start button loose. Older Fords with 2 wires on the solenoid have this. The wire freom the switch is on one post, the othwer wire is the resistor bypass wire to give a hot spark for cranking.

Wally ---- When you hold the start button , she is running on 12v..... when you release the start button she runs on 6v in the run position usinG a restance wire.....LET ME THINK ABOUT THIS.....THE REST OF YOU OLD GUYS CHECK ME OUT..... "JURY RIG" -- Run a wire from the battery or battery side of starter cellunoid, through a 20 0r 30 amp circut breaker (about $6) to a toggal switch (this will be your on/off switch)out of the other side of the switch through push starter button to the + side of the coil.....now run another wire to the + side of the coil from the on/off switch through a restor (NAPA has them--older Chrisler cars used them, about $12)this cuts the voltage down to 6v.....the engine runs on 6v ...starts on 12v .....when you release the start button only 6v remains..... be sure to place the restor under the hood screwed to the firewall....it needs air ...because they get hot, burning off 6 of the 12 volts.....

I think this will work, havent done it for 35 or 40 years..... ..Don

Straight wire from the battery,or a fused source to a toggle switvh, then to the coil. You shouldnt have to worry about much else on a 71 thats a farm truck.

Yes Wally, you will need an external switch for the coil, that turns the motor on and off. The ford system with the fender mounted solenoid usually does this. Sounds like that is what went. As long as you give power to the wires that operate the run mode, you can use just a standard ag spring return starter push button. good luck! Dan T

It sounds like the last problem is in the fender mounted solenoid to me.
