Whats a good tractor to hay with? I am looking at a few that I can afford in my area and the list includes a Ford 5000, J.D. 2130, Massey 165 and a Case 2090. I realize the Case is over powered but who wouldn't like to have a 100 HP.

I have the same model haybine and I use a 190 XT series III My biggest complaint is that it has no cab and that it doesn't have a live PTO. However the hand clutch is a blessing. I would suggest that what ever you do get a tractor with a cab.

I'd say the 5000 Ford without a doubt. I have a 42 hp Kubota, and an Oliver 1955 that out of the factory would put down 108 pto hp but mine will do 130hp. One is to small the other too big. If I was just doing square's the Kubota would be great, and the Oliver does a good job wih my round baler and 15' brush hog. But as soon as money allows there will be a Ford 5000 in my barn to run my Vicon CM247 Disc mower. The Kubota is to small for it and the Oliver way to big, a 5000 Ford would fit right in the middle of my other two.

Thanks for all the replies. I should have added more information. I am not really considering the Case 2090. It is to big but I was surprised it was in the same price range of the others. I have a NH Haybine #479 and a MF 120 Baler I picked up at a good price. Both were used this year and work well. The owners manual for both say 35 HP minumum. I see a lot of J.D. 2030 to 2130's and MF 165 and 255's used with this haybine. I am leaning toward either the Ford 5000 or the J.D. 2130. The 5000 is a bigger machine and the J.D. is about $4000 more. Dealer support for all makes is readily available in this area. The Ford seems to be more versatile for other implements, ie, backhoe or snow thrower, due to it's size. I am going to go look at the J.D.s (3 currently available) and the Ford again today.

Yes I'm biased, but the 5000, hands down. That's my opinion, but others have made good points too. If you have a dealer of another brand close to you, that should be a consideration as well. Let us know what you go with.

Depends.

The 440 Baler gets a 656, the Vermeer 605 gets the 856. If my little brother shows up with his 4910 we use his 7140.

In a pinch the 350 will pull the 440.

Which one would you get the best dealer support on? We have a red one, a green one and the guy we work has a blue one. In our case we don't care what color, just buy what we can get service and parts for. Around here not many people make hay. If they do they are all in the business and they are all N-H 575 balers and they pull them with 90+ horse power tractors with cabs and airconditioning.

Try to find a D17 series 4 or a 170 or 175 allis. These have the wet hand clutch power director that can be slipped when baling for the tough spots. Just make sure that they are still sound in the tranny department, there are quite a few of them that got abused in their life. These tractors also have the low pressure, high volume hydraulics (for a D17, anything other than a series 4 will have high pressure low flow). Good luck (this is for square baling, but they can also handle a smaller round baler, but not the best loader tractors)

I agree with the others. Try and match your equipment power and hydralic requirements to the tractor. Dont forget that a hi pressure tractor hydralics with low pressure equipemt can blow cylinders. IE WD series AC with INT sickle mower. I just found that out. lol Bob

We hay with 4 different tractors John Deere 7600, 2750, and a 6415 pull balers and a McCormick Cx 105 is our rake tractor. All have cabs. I would like to find some good 4040 Deeres to hay with and get rid of the 2750 and replace the 6415, bceause it is just rented. We normally hay at night so a cab is a must to keep the wind and bugs at bay.

Are you doing round or square bales?
100 hp is not overkill for round bales. I use my Allis Chalmers 190XTD to do round and small squares and it about twice as big as needed for the square. I also use a 62 Ford 4000 Select O Speed which is one of the best I have used to do small squares. With the slip clutch on the baler, too large a tractor is not a problem except for the manuvering as was mention in a prior post. My fields are open so it is not a problem.

Have to disagree with you. As per the owner manual on say a NH850 it states that you should use a tractor from 55-75HP the reason is because useing a bigger tractor can and will damage the baler if something goes wrong. Thats the reason they put things like that in the manual becuase to big is just as bad as to small. I usto use an Allis 190XT on my baler and I stopped doing so when I found out what the manual said and the reason why it says that. Over kill and kill the equipment

I use an Oliver 1650 diesel wheatland hooked to my NH 851 to bale with and it does a great job but on really steep land around here I used to use my 190XT until I sold it and now use my Ford
8000 for the extra weight and power the steep hills require. All 3 tractors are nice to bale with and have never damaged anything as the shear pin should break if anything gets in a bind.

Yep shear pins should brake first but and thats the big thing they don't always brake before something else does. I'm lucky most of the places I bale is pretty flat so the Oliver S88 does a good job

Anything but the 2090. Neighbor had one and it was a beast to get around with, even with 15 ft tillage and planting equipment so it would be next to impossible in tight spaces with hay equipment. I"ve got a JD 2030 which can do everything hay related but run a 9ft discbine. Maybe the 2130 would run a dicbine. Can"t go with JD parts and resale.

To much HP can be as bad as not enough HP when useing implaments. Thats why the manauls will say like for my NH850 baler 55-75HP tractor. My self I use an Oliver Super 88 to pull my baler which is the 850 it handles it well and yet isn't over kill. Plus an old Oliver can be had for less money then a lot of other tractors and the live/independed PTO is also nice and almost some thing that is need to bale with

Yep and you only have about 1 maybe 2 HP more then I do. Funny how people don't understand to much power is as bad or worse then not have enough. Guess thats why Allis had trouble with the 190XT when it first came out becuase yhey used the rear end and tranny form the D-19 and why Farmall had trouble with the 560 when they used the rear end and tranny from the 450. To much power can and is as bad as not enough. The tractor you have is one I would like to have if and only if it didn't have the hyd dro boost

I guess I been using to big of a tractor for a long time. I started using my 1466 sometime ago as it has a cab and it goes slow enough to swallow the larger straw windrows created by a CIH 2388. I have ran it on my NH small square baler with no problem in alfalfa hay also. Make sure your slip clutch is adjusted right and the baler is shear pinned protected. Now if your tractor is under powered is a problem as your PTO clutch or your transmission is not protected from any fail safes and you can tear things up. We had a neighbor tear up the PTO on a 4640 hooked to a large NH square baler. It would rock that tractor pretty good. He now uses a 8000 series JD of about 210 HP. I would say under powered can be dangerous and cause more damage than over. Just my 2 cents. Good luck in finding your tractor!
