Well...the last Troybilt mower I had lasted 18 years.
Felt a new one was in line so I went to Lowes and got one...in a box.
Got the thing home and it is nothing like the last one. Seems MTD bought them out.
I could tell the difference the first time I used it...very sad. the thing is already making noise in the drive unit.
Guess another American made product bites the dust....darn it.

I own a Scag 32" walk behind. Best mower I've ever had. Made in the USA although mine has a Kawasaki engine. They are available with Kohler engines.

I've had my share of conventional mowing tractors , mostly Deere..After miserably putting up with the poor construction of these mowers,,I went with a zero turn..Encore Z48....I haven't spent over $ 120.00 in repairs in 9 years...Where's some wood ?? I need to knock on wood....

Well it was a sad day when Garden-Way ( Troy Bilt ) decided to sell out a few years ago, and leave here, the local senate majority leader did make an effort to help, but in NY, and in the City of Troy, a lot of post industrial revolution business left or went bust.

I knew the facility well, used to deliver there years ago, and used to get parts for my tiller there, was kind of cool to have the place in your backyard and also be proud of a product like they made, from your home town. Lot of people lost good jobs, same old story, know the people who own the facility now, at least it's not abandoned. Another long time one, Schrade Cutlery in Ellenville, NY 100 years now re-organized and am lead to believe products are made in china, not 100% sure what the deal is, they made a fine product too.

Not much out there to buy anymore. If you want a mower built like one from the late 1960s, be prepared to spend 5-8,000 dollars. MTD owns almost every brand out there.Toro owns wheel horse, so they've gotten cheap too. I looked at Snappers not too long ago and they seemed really heavily built, at least the decks seem so.

Toro stopped production of the mowers with steering wheels, sales fell off, so, real quick, you will not be able to buy a Toro tractor, they still ahve them in warehouses and at disributors, but as far as I know, they are manufacturing no more tractors, soooo sad, they took a good tractor cheapened it up, now they wonder why it will not sell. Now Toro is selling a tractor, made by MTD :>(. As far as I am concerned that is the bottom of the barrel.

The only thing most people take pride in these days is how much money they make - scratch that -they don't even take pride in that, but it is the only thing they care about.

The quality of their work does not matter to them one bit, so it is not so suprising that the quality of what they buy is only slightly more important.

Well...when this drive and deck fall apart...I will take this engine and put on the old one. The other Briggs just wore out. It will fit this deck.
Don't matter to me how much I own or make as long as I can pay the other halfs bills on time.
I drive an 11 year old Dodge PU...I darn sure don't need a fancy BMW or Lexus to carry my backside to work.

There are a LOT of MTD brands out there. MtD also sells the ones at TSC and they own Cub Cadet. It becomes difficult to find a non-John Deere, non-MtD brand of lawn mower or lawn tractor. Who owns Snapper?

Snapper, and Simplicity are now owned by Briggs and Stratton. Husqvarna is owned by Electrolux Home Products, the saem company that sells, Poulan, Poulan Pro, Sears Craftsman. MTD owns White, Yard Man, Troybilt, Cub Cadet, Yard Machine, Ryobi, McCulloch, Manufacturers Lesco's equipment, They are also manufactureing the low end Toro tractors, and maybe a few more. Don't knwo who is making the low end John Deere tractors, don't look like a Deere, but everyone says Deere does not have anyone but Deere making their little low dollar tractors.

Unfortunatly, your not the first person that I've heard from that had the same experience.

My brother bought one of the smaller tillers and it seems okay, but not near as heavily built as the ones in the past.

How long can a company survive on name alone?

Actually, it's a different generation and the younger folks seem to have a different way of thinking than we do.....

My father, expected to rebuild a water pump on his car.

I expected to replace a water pump on my car.

Todays generation expects the water pump to break in a few years and their solution is to just throw the car away and buy another one, on credit of course.

On the other hand, your mower lasted 18 years so sales are 18 years apart..... you already have a noise in the new one so the sales cycle is likely to shorten to less than 5 years.

It's all about expectation..... .sad, but I've been force to lower mine on the new stuff, and is another reason I love the old iron..... .

Biggest problem with any thing now days is its all made to use one maybe 2 years and then just throw it away and buy a new one. Almost nothing made today it made to last and if it does last the company wants it back so they can figure out where they made a mistake when it was built
