Texas has long had the best judges that money can buy.

Water is pretty darn toxic. in reply to MN BOB, 08-02-2006 05:28:09
Which is to say almost anything with too much in the wrong place and time can be toxic.

Milk spills are acutely toxic to water ways, for that matter.

If you put 50,000 steers together and have the wallow in their waste, and make dry "islands" for them by bulldozing up mounds of manure for them to stand on...I'm going to the think the nitrogren and other nutrient overloading is going to be a tad excessive.

Did some googling, best I can tell, there hasn't been a court decision yet but there are cases in the pipeline trying to put some of these very large confined animal operations under Superfund jurisdiction.

If you look north of the border, Ontario farmers have formal Nutrient Management Plans they have to follow for environmental reasons.

Is it a bad thing if you shut down large confinement feedlots putting on weight to profit the beefpacking corporations and put the steers back out on the range putting on weight to profit ranchers?

Is it a bad thing a bunch of farmers who already practiced good manure management so their fertilizer ended up in plants and not streams are going to have fill out more paperwork because of farmers who didn't care, or corporations which polluted trying to save a buck?

We just say that's the smell of money down here. lol. That judge probably owns some cattle that were almost ready for market and now the price is taking a dive because of this drought. Lots of sour people around right now because of that. Several places compost the manure and make a good fertilizer or bagged mulch from it but they charge a lot more for that than just straight from feedyard to the fields. It hasn't rained and no one is buying it to put on fields so probably piling up?

I have heard comments about big big farmers wanting to buy manure from dairy , hog, and chicken operations. When they are turned away, for what ever reasons, they say "well, in a few years you'll be begging us to take it, or paying us to take it. Is there something in the political back yard going on that the big guys have insight to, that we dont.

Saw a thing on the news last night where the University of Iowa is experimenting with turning manure into a bio-diesel oil. Apparently they do have it figured out, and have actually manufactured a small amount of useable product.
