I got that e-mail. What is being paid? Is it actually money or is it TIME?

At one time the proposed internet "tax" was a time tax. It was originally proposed to cut back on people sending SPAM.

How it works is that when a person sends an e-mail, your computer would be sent a mathematical equation to solve (you will never physically see the equation). When the equation is solved the message is sent. That is the "tax". For one person, sending one e-mail you will never notice the amount of time it took for your computer to solve the math problem. BUT, if you are Ebay and sending out thousands of emails every hour, the time to solve EACH math equation for EVERY e-mail sent (every equation is unique) will slow down their computers is a serious way. So, to work around this problem, Ebay would need to spend more money, on more computers, to send the same amount of e-mail traffic in the same amount of time it takes them now.

This is how the internet police wish to control SPAM e-mail. The people who send SPAM would be slowed in a serious way because of the time tax.

So is the "tax" the e-mail was referring to money or time? I did not follow their links to determine this.

No, and that's not technically feasible. in reply to homard, 08-02-2006 13:05:44
Nope, that's not what eBay and most other major internet companies are complaining about.

Besides, that scheme would do absolutely zip against spam since 99.99% of it is sent from hijacked machines so the spam senders could really give a rat's petute if it slows down someone's PC.

eBay &tc are talking about how the major ISPs like Verizon, AT&T, etc want to create different levels of service so they can hold vendors hostage to premium service prices.

One major driver of trucking and the Interstate Highway System was the arrogance of the railroads -- you have to ship by us, at our rates, at our schedule. Very similiar to the big Telcos today, once again. They've managed to get down to only one or two mergers left to re-consolidating AT&T and they're flexing the monopolist powers again.

Oh, it's probably true.

Here's the one sentence explanation:

While screwing consumers is always fair game, the fun begins in Congress when Corporations try to screw each other.

The slightly longer explanation:

Currently the internet is provided "net neutral" -- all traffic from anyone to anyone is given the same priority.

The large internet service providers want to change that -- telling large corporations if they want the best performance to consumers, they'll have to pay a premium. Pay more money, they'll give your services a higher priority.

Trying to translate it into simpler terms...

I have a phone line and pay for unlimited use each month.

Ebay has a phone line and pays for unlimited use each month.

Phone company isn't happy, since there's not much profit growth in that.

So they tell Ebay, "Ok, you depend on your phones. If you don't pay for premium service, when someone calls you, we'll make the phone ring at least 4 times before you can pick it up and have a static-filled connection, instead of just once, with a nice clear connection. Which one do you think your customers would prefer?"

Even IF true, respond only through the secure site, as scammers will be sure to pick up on a new way to get your ebay personal information.

Isn't it interesting how she criticizes the big corporations, yet her precious ebay has turned into one, with all the rules and requirements set up to make more mega$$$$$ for ebay, and NO help or personal service for the typical ebay user who encounters a problem!

Sign in securely to your ebay account, and look in "My Messages",

If the message is REALLY from ebay, it'll be in there in the secure area.

However, there's a 99.999% chance it is a "PHISHING" email from crooks with NO connection to ebay, and when you respond to it, you will be giving away your private ebay account information to a scammer.

NEVER, EVER respond to ANY message that looks like it's from ebay, without confirming that a copy appears in the secure area accessed through your ebay account, and even then, respond to the email ONLY through the secure ebay site, rather than through your email.

I can't believe the amount of fake stuff folks get that they actually believe has come from ebay!

Some time back there was a message of that nature right on eBay, I did nothing about it, and seeing how eBay is now a dying horse, I think it is just another attempt to help eBay keep their head above the water.

Log into eBay, then go to the eBay stores discussion forums. Due to eBays increased fees for sellers, most of the big sellers are moving out.

Ebay is a dying horse, huh??? Just because a couple of the china special vendors can"t make as much of a killing as they have in the past does not constitute a dying horse. I think ebay could stand to loose a few of the so called "big sellers." I say good riddance to them. I"d like to know where "they" think "they" are going to go to have the kind of market that they have on ebay.

Apparently you are not an ebay seller or you would know that ebays new fee structure for sellers is taking ALL of the profits out of selling. There are several other auction type websits that charge a very low monthly fee, with NO insertion fees, and NO final value fees.

You take it wrong sir, I am an ebay seller, and I have been totally happy with my experieces over the past 5 years. I have 100% feedback, and have only had one dead beat buyer (on a 1958 chevroletabout a year ago). I sell tractor parts and antique automobiles and parts exclusively and for me there is no alternative BUT ebay. Compared with the price of loading it all up and taking it to a swap meet, or running ads in the paper, ebay can't be beat. HOWEVER Buyer beware and HONESTY should rule in what ever sale venue you choose.
