Hi Guys,

Fight is over!

Darned tractor blew a head gasket. Okay, fine.

Took the head off, sent it to the machine shop, emptied the bank account until the teller glared at me to get the head back out of hock, put 'er on and the tractor won't run right.

Just knew the darned valves were stickin' in the guides. I've had it happen before.

Sure didn't want to pull that head again so I started doing some checking. Wait a minute! The darned old rascal has compression! If the valves were hangin' she wouldn't have any wind to speak of.

Okay, time to stop cussin' the machinist.

More checking. Say, that spark just doesn't look right. Check it at the coil tower and it just isn't consistant on the secondary. Aw ha! Must have a bad coil, 'cause I just put in a new pick-up ignition system a couple of months ago.

So, we put a new coil on and no joy. Same darned thing, 'cept now it doesn't run at all.

Now, hold the phone. The darned tractor was running like a million bucks 'til it blew that head gasket, what the heck is going on?

Bottom line, solid state ignition went belly up. Put the points back in and it purrs like a kitten. I have no idea why either. What ruined the ignition? :>(

Side note: Darned camera is quick. That engine was running at about 1,000 rpm when I snapped the picture. Stopped that fan and rockers in their tracks. :>)

See someone below said they got the wrong one first time. Maybe they did that to you? Check the catalog and see what is recommended for sure.

Allan, I can relate, when I bought my little 424 someoone had already put a pertronix unit in it..after it got warmed up real good,it would start poppin and cracking a little, rewired it,changed everything, still did it until i sprung for a new module..problem solved, for about 8 months..now it's doing it again..acts exactly the same,if I had the backing plate for the points,I'd put them back in and be done with it..

Just makes me even more glad I have stayed with the old fashioned points and cond. in my stuff. I can buy alot of points sets for a $100 module.

The points and cond. I put in the JD 4020 right after we got it in I think 1993 ? are still working good.Maybe have 600 hrs. on them.

Good point, Mike

The shop where I bought the conversion kit ordered me another yesterday.

Trouble is, now I'm kinda scared to put it in. If they screw with the cylinder timing when they go bad, maybe it is not such a good idea.

All I know is that the silly tractor is humming like a new Singer Sewing machine now and I sure don't wanna go thru this head scratchin' ordeal again.

I was to the point that I was startin' to cuss this red tractor. Seems unnatural, somehow. :>)

Can't answer why your solid state ignition went out, but I can explain why your camera froze the fan blade. It's not so much the camera as it is the flash, which fires maximum power in about 1/250,000th of a second. If you camera's shutter fired at 1/125th of a second with no flash, there would be significant blur. When the flash fires, it has max power from around 1/125,000th-1/250,000 of a second. Did you ever see the famous photo of the bullet going through the apple? These flashes fire at about 1/1,000,000th of a second.

Hi Bob,

The only reason I bought the ol' devil was 'cause I've never owned a gas tractor before.

Never will again either. :>)

Allen I put in a kit from D----'s carb shop (3020} started hard low power --new sleeves and pistons rebuilt head (it was wore out and head was cracked)kept getting worse till it wouldn't start at all-- ordered one from this site (different # than I had in it) made a new tractor out of it--

Some times the simple things will drive you crazy Allan. Yep BTDT and know how it goes. I'll almost bet the ignition may have had something to do with your head problem in the fisrt place by running it to advanced or retarded. But that is only a guess but I know if it was going out it could well have been doing just that also

Hmmm, Never thought of that.

When I was trying to get it to run right, the darned thing sure seemed like it was out of time also.

Had to retard the distributor 'bout 20 degrees before it would even attempt to pop.

Got me,

Allan

Well if I remember right the problem started out with burnt valve which if the distubutor wasn't working right with that eletronic stuff could well have caused the valve to burn becuase it was bad out of time. Aren't engine fun to figure out some times LOL. So I guess the fires are pretty well burn out right??

Ya I know a person that lives out that way. She posts on the Ford 9N/2N/8N forum all the time and from what I have read she lost at least one building to the fire.
