Ok, has anyone had a pto that had to be engaged with the tractor not running, then restart the tractor to start the pto? Then one day while cutting grass the pto just quit working, like someone flicked a switch and it quit, no noise, nothing. Now no matter what I do, I get nothing out of the pto. The lever will engage easily, when the tractor is running or not, but the unit itself is unresponsive.

What tractor - live, independent, or transmission type of pto? Really can't help you without info.

How hard were you using the pto at the time it quit running - I will assume you were using it at the time?

I will suspect the clutch was shot so you were engaging the pto with the engine off - it would chatter & no engage itself with the engine running, correct? You'll need to get that fixed too, as you wear out starter after starter doing it your way - in addition to not being the safest, & less fun to use.

Now, something broke/ wore out completely, and the pto clutch plates are no longer connecting. Could be a simple $2 bolt, or could be a very $$$ casting or shaft/ bearing that went out. No way to tell tho from the info you didn't provide. :)

A lot of that depends on what tractor you have. It could be a simple adjustment to needing a new clutch or shaft coupler. Need a lot more info to be able to help
