i had my 8 n rebuilt from top to bottom,,,had a pro machine shop assemble it also. we bolted the motor back on the tractor. cranked it over with the plugs out, and no oil pressure to the gage.we didnt crank it much, but enough to relize the pumps not primed, and the motor was assembled with pre lube , no worries there. i dont want to take the motor off and oil pan and pack the oil pump with vasoline,, what can i do to get the pump to prime?

thanks dave

Not a problem. Just pull out the oil pressure sender unit and pump as much oil as you can in through an oil can. Put a small section of plastic hose on the spout of the can and push it in to the hole. Keep pumping until the hose pushes out, should only take 1/2 a pint maximum and it will be enough. Quickly put the sender back in and turn the engine over.
I was a mechanic for 20yrs plus and used to do that on all my engines. It will pick up oil pressure pretty well straight away after that.
I ended up making a small pressure vessel out of a section of 4" exhaust pipe, put a fitting from a tubless tire in it and a small section of plastic hose from a tap. Used to pump up the pressure with a hand or foot pump, only took less than 5psi to push in the oil. But the oil can will work just as well.
Enjoy your new engine.

Old is right on. Even a little 85/140 gear oil shot in the hol e won't hurt anything.. it'l only hold a little, and then you have to slap the relief back in fast and get cranking befor ethe oil drains out thru the pump..

Shame on the machine shop for not packing that pump!

On my 9n, therd is a fitting behind the exhaust pipe clamp where the oil line tees off to the pressure gauge. I have taken the line to the gauge off at this point and squirted several shots of oil from a pump oiler in there to fill it up back to the pump. Your mileage may vary, but it has always worked for me. Best of luck.

Pull the relief valve out of the pump and fill it with say a 50W oil and then put it back in. It can be done with out takeing anything apart other then that one thing
