Fan belt tight

Use to do all my own mechanic work, but can't now. Just had the water pump replaced on my Dakota. All is great except the 205 dollar labor. But man, did they tighten the belts. I can only bend them about a quarter inch with thumb and finger. Wonder if I should go in and loosen them a bit. I know too loose is hard on belts, but is too tight hard on bearings. These are the same used belts. New ones might give a little as they wear.

Thanks for the back-up opinion guys. I backed them off and it sounds a lot better-less squeel. Some body had a big hand, the bolts were over tight too. For 90 bucks and hour I should have taken it back, but I am not that kind of guy. BTW; that bolt on the Dakota PS pump is 15 MM and only through the spokes of the pulley in the proper position.

Greg is 100% on point--belts too tight will eat up bearings, and are cheaper than anything else. Believe older recommendation was 1 inch deflection, but with smaller, more compact engines could be too much; but if they're too loose, they'll squeal on acceleration. Good luck.

Ken, I would back them off a little if I felt they were too tight. Belts are cheap and water pumps, alts, power steering pumps are not. Up until this year I had a houseboat on Lake Powell and every spring we would hire out the maintenance work and they always had belts too tight. We would lose an idler pulley on each engine each year until I started backing off the tension. The new serpentine belts do not have to be very tight to work like the old V belts did.
