I cut it about 7 weeks ago. The cut was on the top of the middle section of the middle finger and extends almost to the knuckle closest to the fingernail. I am pretty well healed up on the outside but I'm very stiff. I had a pin in it to prevent movement for 6 weeks and the pin was removed a week ago.

I'm having a little trouble getting back full movement. I am wondering if I'm expecting too much. Luckily it's on my left hand, but, being very much a hands on person, I am not adjusting well psychologically to the slight handicap.

I would be interested in hearing of anyone's similar experiences and how you've done with recovery.

I have been exercising it during the day and wearing a splint at night to straighten it out. Every morning it is stiff, but I'm able to work it out to the previous days range of movement. I can't make a fist yet, but it seems to be getting a little better. I can close it about 60%.

I'm interested if anyone has had this happen and how you've recovered.

Hi , I cut the flexor tendon in the bottom of the left index finger about 32 years ago . No problems now . Took a LONG time to get back to near normal . I was in my teens and pretty ornery so I pushed it . It still took months if I remember correctly . I had two injuries to that finger in that year though . I was recovering from breaking that finger 1/8" from the palm joint and pushing the bone from the inside of the finger into the back of my hand just under the skin . My finger was about 1/2" long with the fingernail right up next to the knuckle . It didn't hurt much . I wrecked my motorcycle for the broken finger . One of those over the handle bars and the finger gets stuck under the clutch lever as you go over . The finger isn't straight with the rest of the fingers , it's rotated a little towards the second finger so it bends over the top of it when I make a fist unless I make sure it's up against the side of it . That one took about 2-1/2 months to heal and the the month I got it out of the cast is about when I cut the tendon . It seems doctors will tell you to expect the worst so you will push it . I guess I did it right . The only problem now is the artheritis is getting to it faster than the other index finger . Good luck and push it till it hurts so bad you sweat . Really ! Good luck ...Randy

I cut my index finger with a bow saw , about 30 years or so ago. Cut the tendon clean in two. Like you said , healed on the outside. Took quite a long time(months) to heal on the inside. Other than the scar , you'd never know anything ever happened. Healed up good as new. Brother cut hand off in hay baler. Other than a little deformed , he has full use of that hand again.

Yep...you're expecting too much at this point...

I cut the extensor tendons in my right index finger on top of the knuckle where it meets the fist...Doctor kept it immobilized for ten weeks after the surgery. The stiffness took many months to get better....Never did disappear all the way.

Keep exercizing it...you're doing the right things. Be happy it wasn't on your right hand. Better yet, be happy you still have a finger !!!

YES you just have to keep working at it. Did the same thing to a thumb and it was just a matter of keeping at it. I recovered all but the most extreme motion--with one hand I can touch the heel of my palm, not with the cut hand.

I was working on top of a grain bin we were assembling about 25 years ago and I slipped and fell on my wrist right on top of one of those sharp metal ladder rungs on top of the bin. I cut my wrist and the tendons in it. I had to have it fixed at the hospital and it was quite a traumatic injury when it happened. Only problem I ever have is when he stitched my tendon he made it a little thicker than it used to be and it is uncomfortable to write with a pencil and paper. Other than that it is fine and I have no side effects that I ever notice. You will be fine and in time you wont even notice it anymore. Actually you will want to forget it! Good luck.

Sounds like you are doing good. Relative did that a number of years ago, think he's in good shape now. Takes time, and doing what you are doing. Will be months, not weeks, be4 you feel back near normal. If I recall correctly.

I hope it works out ok. I lost all my fingers except my thumbs fifty years ago and I get along just fine.
