Can't keep the beast running. I recently had the carb professionally rebuilt (ould not keep it running prior to this). The tractor turns over and will start using ether. But dies the minute the ether stops. Checked the bowl in the carb to see if gas was getting there. Gas is getting to the carb. Is there an air filter on this thing I can check (and how). Not certain what the next step is to solving this running problem. Can somebody please advise!

Pull the intake loose off carb and see if it runs better. If so your air cleaner may be plugged up. If it doesn't have the external intake stack the cap on air cleaner under hood may be plugged or smashed down too. The whole air cleaner, stack, & pipe may be plugged with old grease, dirt, gunk or mud daubers nests. Do you have the Marvel Schebler USX carb or later Zenith carb? Seems to be problems with the newer Zenith carbs being sold by many quick $$$ dealers too.

I do have an external stack on this tractor (with the dust collector bowl). Is the air filter in that fatter green section blow this? How in the world do you get it out? My only concern about the air filter is, this stack is where I squirt the ether. That apparently is getting to the engine well enough, I can't imagine air would have difficulty. I do have one of the older Zenith model carbs on this tractor (model 69). Frankly I have never trusted the adjustment mixing screws etc. It also has an electric (Wire coming from it) main needle screw. I'm not certain where the pigtail end of this goes too.

Just a bit more info for you. The tracto never needed to be started on ether. I used it to put in a new hay field. Cut hay with it several months later and then it just stopped running. It cranks over beutifully, but only fires on ether.

If you need to get the air cleaner off to clean it out better you'll probably have to remove the dash cover, side panels, screens and lift the hood off to get at it better or at least lift the hood propping it up. You'll find views of the air cleaner in the 3010 parts book at JD Parts online by clicking on parts catalog in left column and entering 3010 there. You sure shouldn't have to be starting it with ether this time of year and may need to check timing, valve setting and wear on distributor and other things also. That ether cuts down on ring and engine life everytime you have to use it. Seems when weather gets hot and humid air doesn't move as well and blockages in air cleaners and the like really show up more and you'll notice several people on here having that problem this month?? Mud daubers and old dirt grease build up inside air cleaner and tubes can really cut off the air flow and won't let any new engine breathe right and carb not get enough air and runs rich no matter how you set it. Some of those Zenith 69 carbs can be rebuilt and do real well but some just seem to be junk like the M/S USX carbs depending on the age and care they were given over the years. Last 69 carb I rebuilt for a MM had to have all the parts, float, and kit ordered from factory as warehouse didn't have it but it was available yet. That solenoid needle valve should be adjustable but some are not. It has to be hooked in the ignition circuit to open when ignition is turned on and shut when ignition switch is turned off. It was suppose to keep it from dieseling and running on after shutting off the switch. Should be able to figure out where it hooks in parts book. If not enough voltage to it or bad switch or wiring it isn't going to work right either. You can get a manual adjustable needle for most carbs to go in there but need the carb number to know if one is available for it.

Interestingly enough, it fails to find air filter. I get every filter but that one. It has an oil cup at the bottom of that large green cylinder connected to the dust collector. Perhaps that all it has. I found nothing in the original manuals either.

There isn't a replaceable element air filter there if that is what you were looking for. The oil breather type filters had the oil filled to certain level in cup and most dirt but not all collected in the cup to be serviced periodically. The larger cannister is filled with like steel wool, steel shavings and older ones had horse hair in them to filter out the larger particles but that does get dirty after a while or if cup wasn't serviced like it should have been. You can remove the cannister and stacks and wash them out or disconnect pipes washing them out on tractor and let drain and then spray some oil back inside and let drain and fill cup back up reconnecting it all. Brian and several others having running rich problems washed theirs out finding dirt daubers and grease galore inside them. They just won't let air flow when like that and you have to remember how old these tractors are now and air cleaner has probably never been given a good cleaning.

when you got your carb back were the jet adjusting screws opened to a aprox, what they shuld be . the power jet set at about 2 turns open the idle jet about 3/4 open for starters then go from tnere that shuld run at half throdel.

Pull the chock out and turn the engine over so that you will flood the motor. Remove any spark plug check to see if it is wet with fuel If it is wet you have a spark problem and not a fuel problem.
