starting fluid

just bought a ford 535 tractor.per the seller the engine had just been rebuilt.enging runs fine but will not start without the use of starting fluid.replaced fuel filter but no change.i'm not much on diesls so what should look for?weak fuel pump?

Also, make sure the cranking system is in good shape. Good batteries,connections,starter, etc. A diesel needs to crank over strong to light up.

Check the timing. Had the same trouble with an IH combine after they rebuilt it... timing was off, now it starts every time.

Most the ford diesels Ive ran started without heat or glowplugs but Im in south florida, Have you tried the manifold heat or glowplugs?..Majors right about startin fluid, it can damage your engine. I think amount used is more critical than the number of times its used. You can go from just enough to damaging in the blink of an eye.
oh, and dont use either with heat or glowplugs.

My super 55 diesel was rebuilt, but the old injection is still on it. I have to use the manifold preheater to start mine, But once running starts and runs just fine.

Get proof from the seller that the engine has been rebuilt and what has been done.

These are excellent engines and should start easily. Starting fluid will damage the engine I have found in over 40 years experience. Its OK to use it once or twice but not all the time.
