A few weeks ago I was having trouble with worms eating my corn tops. I have that under control. Now the crows are eating my water melons. They go form melon to melon pecking holes, and eating a small amount. The melon rots from the hole. Any help on the crows will be appreciated. Stan

Hang one dead crow up by the feet. The last time I did that, I didn't see a crow around the farm for close to a year. This poor fellow died by lead implant..... I didn't miss his freinds either....

12gauge #4 shot works fine and leave the dead crows where they can see them they won"t come back after a while and a few friends die .

I have seen crows in melons around here as long as I can remember. Some years are worse than others. We used to string the patch. Put tobacco sticks in the ground around and through the patch and run string, usually tobacco twine, randomly to connect the sticks. We would do this after we finish cultivating. Now I still use the sticks and I use the plastic orange or yellow reflective tape and zig zag across the field. Crows have not been a problem even though they are still around. I have not found a way to keep the deer out however. I always heard that the crows are afraid they will get caught in the tape or string. Hope this helps

That's a new one on me, melons. But we have crows going after the corn, that's for sure. Don't know what to tell you about that one, and in Indiana, although its varment (ie: coyote) season all year long for "property owners", it aint crow season but twice a year, and just happens to be right now until mid-August.

Got worse problems with Mom's garden though. Something big with paws the size of my fist I'm told that woke the lab and collie up the other night and had them going nuts and waking everyone up. I know we've got big cats (puma and cougar type) in the area that Michigan DNR released, and that was my first thought since have tracked them along fencelines after past sightings and maulings in the area. But according to my neighbor Dan, he's got one huge recent den under his barn, and believes this to be a badger by the tracks around the den and since deer in the area are plentiful right now - so doubtful is a cat this time. Both are nasty to deal with, and its never open season on either. Mmm mmm mmm. Can only trap and release badgers and they aint nice and will shread a dog easily enough. We'll take a look this weekend after get home.

Michigan DNR did not release any cougars, etc. In fact they deny their existance in Michigan. That"s in spite of what many credible folks have reported, in cluding a friend of mine, who darn near hit one with his car a couple weeks ago.

Yeah, I know Lloyd. That's the story line they give. They've been seen too many times not to exist, including tracks. A mauled horse that they first blamed wild dogs for, except that they have 4 toes and a dew claw that don't reach anything to claw. Been too many sitings and too many dead and mauled farm animals...all by wild dogs? Best way to find out if DNR did it...take one down, let the carcass set and cool and see how long before DNR shows up looking for a cold GPS chip. Don't do it on your property though. As a matter of fact, not long ago was a den of cubs that were shown on TV. Nope, they don't exist.

Years ago when I was a kid and we(my family, and a few uncles and aunts)used to plant alot of sweetcorn, the darn crows would come in and pull the seed.Dad used to shoot a couple, pound some stakes in the garden and tie(hang) the crows to the stakes until the corn got well on its way..always worked. They must not of wanted to end up in the same situation..... ??

If I shot one 20 more would come looking for their friend. These are fairly smart birds, when I leave they return. Stan

If you shoot one crow and leave him there all day the other crows will come back and "preach his funeral"..... ....then they will usually stay gone.

Get you a Johnny Stewart fighting crows tape or CD and you'll kill a half dozen or so in 10 minutes.....

Thatīs no joke. When I lived in south Louisiana, a friend and I watched crows coming and going to their roost in the morning and evening. We set up on the edge of a cane field in their daily flight path before dawn with the crow call playing and we each went thru a box of shells. Went back in the afternoon and did the same as they headed back to roost. Once you get one or two on the ground, they just keep coming. We did that four or five days in a row. Most fun I ever had with a shotgun.
