Hello,
We were out mowing this afternoon with our MF 265 diesel and the engine suddenly surged twice and then quit. It would not restart so we bled the fuel lines, there was air in the lines, and after they were bled it started right up. We mowed for 5 more minutes and then it surged once and quit. This time we waited about 10 minutes and it again restarted however it was time to move on to other stuff so the tractor was parked and left for the day.
We are thinking that there are two possible causes...possibly a slight clog or blockage in the bottom of the fuel tank or lines before it gets to the filter or possibly a leak in one of the lines, or both.
Since y"all are experts in the field of just about anything tractor related and beyond, i figured i"d ask what steps should be taken first tomorrow? Or does anyone have another suggestion as to what it could be? Thanks in advance.

Post this on the Massey board also. Not sure on the 265 but the 245 has rubber "vent" lines that return to the fuel lines, may be broken/cracked(mine were). When did you last change your fuel filters? Is the fuel bowl below the filters full of water? Is the lift pump working or is it really "wet" around it? Has your oil level gone up or smell like diesel? Have you recently changed your diesel source or type, i.e. biodiesel? Has the tractor sat for a long time without running allowing a fungus to grow? Tell us what you find out so I"ll stop asking questions;-)

fuel filters were changed about 2 months ago (not too many hours on it since then)...fuel bowl was filled with fuel...and the lift pump was working just fine when we bled the lines...no unusual smells or changes...and tractor mowed yesterday and baled a few days before that...

is there a good way to test for cracks in lines at all? or is it just a visual check.

thanks

Good answers! I check all the fuel lines and anything attached to them and look for drips or wet spots when running and not. I "suspect" that if you can"t find the source of "air" then you "may" have an injector pump issue. Post this on the MF board, Big Dean will be able to help you out better.
