Hi Gang;
This view is looking southwards from the same place as the other photo. Shows the typical windswept pasture several hundred feet above sea level. The little pond is fed from a stream coming downhill and the overflow goes down through the meadow to the cliff edge. These were often man-made to provide a watering place for cattle & sheep. The dark green growth is Bracken which is invading the upland fields, kills everything it smothers, root sytem travels undground. VERY difficult to erradicate, spraying & constant mowing will keep it incheck but not kill it. The stalks are "rubbery" and hard to cut-chop. the leaves (fronds) are tough and can cause cancer!
It grows about 5 feet high and is inpetetrable to animals or humans.
The stalks in the foreground are thistles.
Cheers David

 Re: PHOTO - south view of Welsh coast - bracken in reply to 4010guy, 07-18-2006 03:37:56
Hi 4010 GUY;
The bracken plants produce spores under the leaves which are carconogenic (spelling?). Years ago they used to walk through the bracken with backpack mister-blowers to spray but the operators got sick. To-day it can be sprayed from the air - very expensive. Many years ago they used tractor drawn flat rollers which had steel blades like tractor tyre treads to crush and chop the stems. Cheers David

My 7th great grandfather Thrasher (on my mother's side) came to america from Wales some time in the late 1600's..... ...ya don't know any Thrasher's do ya?

That might be the reason I find the context of your photos so appealing! Nice place!
