My experience is the same as Rick's. The smallest 10SI I seen is 37 amps - and then only the cheapest 70's era GM cars (base Chevy Nova, Vega, etc). Also many gas-powered tractors - IHC, Oliver, Massey etc. - used them.

However most (all?) 10SI reman's are rated at 55 or 63 amps. But all are indentical externally.

Keep in mind as long as the regulator is working, an oversize alternator should not overcharge or otherwise harm the battery. Just don't let the battery go dead and then jump start it the tractor (is. so the alternator sends full output into a dead battery). And make sure the wire that connects to the alt BAT terminal is heavy enough (#10 AWG minimum).

The lowest rating I've ever seen was 37 amps. 70's era 10si (internal regulator) found on some cars & light trucks w/o a/c. May be hard to find a reman this low as usually rebuilt to 63 amps.

I am no expert, but I think a big alternator will charge a little battery too fast and shorten battery life. I have seen 42 amp Delco 12si (I think that is the model). Most are 61-63 amp. The old 32 amps had external regulators.

You can use any alternator you want.
The alternator can be rated for 100amps,
but if you only need 30amps then you will only get 30amps.
The amps is a function of the load placed on it.
The more load the more amps.
So just get an alternator that exceeds the minimum you need.
