I have been doing battle with the squirrels for several months now. I live on an Island, and the squirrel population is running rampant! I have tried the red hot pepper trick, and the moth balls, and the spray and they keep coming back. I was going to start trapping them but you run into problems with relocating them. Can't shoot 'em because the wife won't let me. I even heard a guy got arrested for trapping squirrels because it's cruelty to animals.
Well Friday I had to pay a bill for $300 to replace the fuel injection wiring harness in my car because... get this... the squirrels ate the harness! The technician said he found a stash of nuts where my wiring harness used to be and a dead squirrel.

Any thoughts to get rid of the squirrels? It's war now!

Dave

Ever heard of Fresh Cab?, it's a rodent deterrent and says it works on other pests too. It is all natual, and doesn't kill them, it might work for you.

Squirrels are interesting critters. Last fall we planted eight acres of black walnuts, so I have spent a fair amount of time doing the Elmer Fudd bit, defending my potential trees.

When the seeds came up I discovered that virtually all of the nuts dug up on one side of the field had been replanted within ten feet of the original sites. This played havoc with my neat 20' grid, but the seedlings at least are growing. On the north side of the field the purloined nuts have simply vanished.

Gray squirrels dominate the fencerow to the south, red squirrels to the north.

Then I hit upon Goheen's article listed below which reflects this difference in food-hoarding behaviour between reds and grays. It's well worth a read if you have nut-bearing hardwoods.

www.unm.edu/~j*goheen*/*r*ep*r*ints/hoa*r*ding_CJZ.pdf

Now that I've replaced the soffits on the house to keep them out, I feel a little more kindly toward the grays, but it's open season on the reds.

What about using a high frequency sound generator to drive them away, not messy, and the wife is happy too. Look it up on the net.

Tell your wife the island habitat is not big enough
to support all those squirrels. It is more humane
to shoot some of them and kill them quickly and
without suffering than to let them suffer a slow
death of starvation because there is not enough
food to go around. It's called wildlife management.

I didn't climb to the top of the food chain
just to eat purina rabbit chow.

There's room on this earth for all God's creatures.

My preacher told a joke bout squirrel just this Sunday. Had a problem with squirrels on this one island. Three churches tried to remedy the problem. The first church tried to run them away by loud noises and lights at night. No help. The second chuch tried to shoot all of them but there were too many. The third church rounded all of them up, and baptised them in the church. Now, they are only seen twice a year, Easter and Christmas!!!
Thought that was funny, may not help you, though.

Fried squirrel (treat them about like chicken after proper cleaning) or squirrel and dumplings eat quite nicely.

Tell your wife that $300 is enough - your gonna shoot them. If you trap them you don't HAVE to relocate them ANYWHERE - ever heard of "Two go out, one comes back"?

Jack Russel/ Rat Terrier mix! Got three of 'em. One mostly Jack male at the farm and one mostly rat (smaller) female and another mostly Jack male at home. They kill anything! Males will go after ANYTHING that moves except the cats unfortunatly. 'Coons, rabbits, peacocks, chickens, squirrels, rats, birds, mice, fox, moles, groundhogs, etc. Best pest control there is!

The last time I saw a cat on the property was shortly after these two showed up, and it was blazing for the fence.
