'97 1 ton 4x4 Cummins auto. Gets about 15 miles to the gallon. Is this the proper range, or should it be higher? I was under it the other day for something while it was running, and it smelled quite rich. I'm wondering if maybe its due for some new injectors? It does occasionally have a cold-start miss for a few seconds, but it clears right up.

Thanks for y'all's time,
Anthony

I get 13-14 on mine with a 360 gas driving to work and stuck at stop lights and drivethru .

Sounds low to me for a diesel ?

Check out the odometer, my 97 when it was new was 10 percent off, the dealer installed a new sending unit in the 5 speed and it is very accurate now. Empty, truck alone I get consistantly 22 to 24 MPG at 65 MPH. When I pull the three axle enclosed trailer with the Gold D , It wii get 13 mpg, By the way It is turned up to 350 Horsepower This is the old 12 valve engine which I think is more fuel effecient than the 24 valve electronic Cummins .

Do you idle it alot? If so you need to run the snot out of it to get the carbon off the injector tips . Mine will do the same thing after long periods of idle. You could also run some power service or other diesel conditioner through it to clean up the injectors. You didnt say what gear ratio you had? For 4.10s that sounds about right.

Sounds ok to me. I've got an '01 2500 with the 4:10 gear train. Around town and the farm I get about 17, highway if I keep the rpm's under 2000 I get about 20, over 2000 I get about 15.

I've owned over 30 Dodge/Cummins pick-ups, and I agree with kyhayman. If you can really drive it nice, upper teens to 20 is possible with a Dodge/Cummins, but if you are a little more aggresive of a driver it'll go down in the mid to low teens. Driving habits make a big difference with Cummins engine's.
