I have an Oliver 1250 that requires transmission fluid type A for the hydraulics. I went to NAPA and all they had was Dextron and type FA. The NAPA guy said the FA was the same as the type A. I'm not very confident he is correct. IS there much difference in the types and will the FA type work in my Oliver?

Why not just put Hytran in it? Then it would be compatible with hydrualics on any other tractor. I seriously doubt it would hurt your tractor at all.

Hytran is an IH brand name for universal hydraulic-transmission oil. Deere calls theirs Hygard, etc. NAPA will have a generic equivalent. Just make sure it meets Hytran specs. (Hytran has the highest specs) They probably have a grade that is just hydrualic but not transmission oil, dont get that. I use a generic equivalent made by ALCO and I use it in my JDs, a Ford 5000 selectospeed, and even the hydrualic systems of my old 2 cyl JDs. Some of the other people in this forum may skin me alive for this answer, but I think many people worry way too much over the "right" oil for their tractor. Its good enough for a modern 100+ HP tractor transmission and hydrualic system. Just get some lubrication in the darn thing.

Type A is the same as Dextron, which has changed to mercron and Type F or Fa is ford!

that was my assumption but the guy checked with his manager and they said otherwise. thanks for the information. I think I will get the Dextron or Mercron or as others said find the Type A.

I've seen it in the quick stop type stores also. I'm always confused on the different types and trying to learn about them. This is a good place for education.
thanks,
Jerry

I did and it says it is compatiable with Ford. That's the reason I'm not sure the guy is correct about being the same as type A. It does not have any other information. thanks,
Jerry

Well unless something has changed there was in the old days only 2 types of tranny fluid. One is the dexton and the other was the type A. The dexton was for the chev and dodge cars/trucks and the type A was for the ford and AMCs so the type FA should be the newer type A I know. Now heres what the label on a dexton bottle says that I happened to have. This is dexton 111
recommrnded for all trannys requiring dexron-2, 2E, 3 mercon type CJ or type A tranny fluids.
That is right off the label so you can go from there

There used to be 2 types. Type A and Type F. Type F was for Ford until they changed to Dexron. Type A was everyone else. Dexron is what GM, Chrysler, etc use. I have no idea what FA is. I think Dexron can be used in place of Type A.
If there are no clutchs involved, either will work.

LOL, I'm confused. Dexton is used in type A tranny and so is FA since it replaced type A. I guess I'll try what i have and see if it works. I don't guess it will damage anything. BTW, wasn't there a type F tranny fluid? I thout the F was for Ford but I'm probably incorrect there.
thanks,
Jerry

Now go borrow a disc from the farmer down the street and now you have a mixture of both your fluids.

My dad ran dextron in his IH tractors for years as trans-hyd fluid with out any problems. I even ran it in my CC hydros.

I reciently switched back because I don't use I my tractors much and wanted the corosion and moisture protection hytran has. I also have a bucket of hyguard as I needed some trans fluid in a pinch.

Not sure it matters as long as it's clean and free of water.
