How come Gabby Hayes (And Others) always rode Shotgun on the left side of the stage coach ?

Wagons and buggys all drove from the right side. It kept you away from the whip of oncoming drivers. The first cars had right hand drive because they were converted buggys.

I suppose, since most of the time they were being chased and firing behind, and Gabby was a righthand shooter, he'd have to be on that side to turn the gun around.

The movies were actually shot using English stage coaches that were RH drive.

Aloha, Agree with the rest but also, when the driver whipped the horses when being chased by the hold up guys, he wouldn't smack the shotgun guy with the whip. LOL

The brake control was on RH side so driver needed to be on RH to aid in stops.

Brakes were applied anytime the wagon/coach went down a hill so that the horses would not be overrun. Driving with horses really is a fulltime job.
