hello guys.. now that second cutting is done I have a need to sell it.. becouse my barn is FULL! have no room for third cutting. so what would a good price be to sell it at? I was thinking $3.00 a bale. I am in the north part of indiana. the bales are around 55 LBs each.. no rain.. VERY NICE HAY.. some of the best second cutting I have ever seen.. by far the best hay I have baled..

Well I'll tell you this. I sold my first cutting of orchard grass/fescue mix in 50lb. bales for $3.50 delivered. This hay had been rained on once but still was good quality. Yours is worth a little more than $3.00 in my opinion. You need to get in with a big horse boarding barn or something. I sell every bale I make to my mother who has a big boarding operation in St.Louis. They feed between 5,000-6,000 bales a year.

Too bad you don't have it to sell in North Central Texas. BIL turned down $65 bale 4 X 5 round in field for average coastal. Small square grass hay bringing 5 to 6 out of barn. Alfalfa would be MUCH higher here. Tom

Sellin 55 # bales for $3 only yields $109 per ton, much too low for QUALITY Alfalfa Hay. With the increases in diesel, twine, fertilizer, parts the price of hay should be moving UP!!! I am selling straight from the field over a scale for $125 per ton, if I have to touch the bales to move them into storage add another $15 per ton. If the hay tests above 150 or 180 RFQ then you can add another $15 and $30 per ton, respectively.

I like the way you think. Cost of production plus a percent for profit. More, or everyone should sell that way. Here in NW Arizona good hay sells for $11 a bale. About 80 lb bales and not so pure alfalfa.

Tim here in Iowa that would be a good price this time of year.

I think some get 4 in the winter.

But to save some work why not leave the barn full and sell the next cutting out of the field if you can.

Here in MN many advertise for $3.00 per bale, but most hay is sold by the ton. Price then seems to be who loads/transports and unloads. I know some that deliver nearby for 2.25. I have talked to a couple horse owners that wont buy over $60 per ton and that is loaded on their trailer. But they buy quanity. Fellow with a country store has wagons outside all the time and 1 bale or as many as you want for 3. off the wagon. Good luck, Bob

Are you serious??!! Small square bales? I'd burn hay before I'd sell it for that! Those prices are not only terrible but insulting. Those are 1960's prices. Mulch hay brings more than that here in NY.

Yeh, you put $ sweat and often blood into the production, then get little or nothing. Or, Haul it to areas where there is a great need and sell higher, cost of transportation?? Have a nice trip? Some burn hay rather than sell low, and cry cause they cant pay taxes. It's like the old saying supply and demand, or, no one said life was fair.

I priced it a the local feed store last week for $8.50 a bale. I didn't see the hay and didn't ask how much a bale weighed as I wasn't interested at that price.

Last year a fellow could find it locally for around $3.50 but that was "you pick it up and load it yourself".

It's been dry here this year and not a good year for hay locally.

I would be interested to know what it brings. By the way, what area are you located in?
