PHOTO - grain drill rig

This is a typical grain drilling & cultivation rig used in England. The Power Harrow has pto driven vertical cultivating blades, 10 feet wide. A power harrow will normally produce a fine seedbed in one pass except on very heavy clay soils.
The Air Drill on top is semi-permantly mounted and drills in 4.3 inch rows. This width is the most commonly used here, 10ft (3 metre) is the maximum width allowed on roads (without a police escort!). Farmers who's land is in one block will used 12 feet (4 metre) rigs. Some farmers also mount an extra seed hopper on the tractor front 3 point which blows the seed via a tube to the rear hopper.
Its slower speed to power harrow & drill in one pass, but saves on labour & time, plus only one set of wheels to compact the soil. Heavy on HP & fuel consumption though!
