in the middle of this contraption is a 100HP JD 6320 fitted with creepspeed gearbox. Its pushing the front mounted platform, and pulling the trailer which houses the processing plant. The lettace are given final grading & wrapped ready for despatch straight to the supermarkets.

6320 is 80hp. Apparently they don't havest all the lettuce to once, so they must do it in several stages?, but they're running over part of it.

Hi,
The manufacturers always state the gross HP here, not the pto power at 540rpm.
The crop is grown in beds, so the wheels run dowm the wheel tracks.
How much is picked in a run depends on several factors:-
The price paid on the day which can vary if the crop cant be harvested due to weather conditions, less available so higher prices etc
Also the stage of growth of the crop, they may take 2 trips down to get all the best lettace which may leave a few or a lot of plants. They may only have 2 days to harvest the best samples. The crop residue is chopped and ploughed in.
The farmer is under contract to provide X number of lettace a day. To ensure a constant supply he may only take one picking, and plough & replant immediately to ensure he has enough for later in the season. This guy has over 600 acres under lettace and will grow perhaps 6 crops a season. Its pretty intensive & hectic, they work 7 days a week and all hours of daylight to get their quota met.

Cheers David

I'm learning a couple new things here, first of all, as I am sure you know, tractors are sold by pto hp here since thats what the tractor will give you off the pto and thats all the farmers are interested in to run their pto impliments here. I hope he's making some darn good money to be working that hard with his lettuce operation!, and I'll bet he is since he's getting 6 crops off his ground a year. This is neat, and I enjoyed the pictures.
Thank you,
