i have a 42 m recently overhauled. has a delco distributor. if you time the engine on the factory marks, the engine labors hard and over heats. i timed the motor by ear, the timing mark shows up at just about the 12 oclock position. this is about 2 inches from the pointer. whats going on here? all the front gears are lined up correctly. thnx glenn

Could it have a flywheel with timing mark at TDC (for a mag with inertia trip)? Question is: where is timing mark with respect to piston position. If it is TDC, then the timing may be wrong for a distributor and you should measure back the distance for the timing advance which the distributor might require.
Regards, RAB

I've never been able to time an M or an H by the book and have it run right. If you can get it to run right with the "timing by ear" method, go for it. You are the one that knows if the tractor sounds right and feels right.

the tractor has an aftermarket delco -remy distributor, not a magneto. it sits vertically instead of horizontal like the i-h distributors. the timing seems advanced by about 2 inches from the mark. the tractor seems to run the best there. the tractor origionally was a distillate but has a gas head on it. it just went thru a major overhaul, new sleeves, ect.

I have the same dist. as you on my M and when I installed IH Firecraters I had to use less advance other wise I could watch aluminum piston parts come out the exhaust pipe on a good pull. Then I limited total advance so it would idle decent. You did not say what pistons you have so this may not apply .

Since you didn't say and I can't readily figure out if you advanced or retarded the timing I'm going to make a WAG that your advance isn't working. I'm assumeing a mag does have auto advance. But we know about a$$-u-me.
