A friend of mine put a new coil on a tractor he just got. Don't know if it is wired correct or not for I have not seen it but he got it to run. Been runing it for about 2 weeks now and was chopping the other day come in for lunch, went back out and tractor wouldn't start. He started looking and the coil had blown up. Blew the guts out of it and all over. Any idea's what might have caused this.

Nope, 12 volt sys. and 12 volt coil. I told him he might have just got a bad coil. He bought a new one and it is running now. he is almost positive that he turned the switch off. I can't figure out how else he would have shut it off otherwise. He said with the switch off he has no juice to the coil (which I though he might have had going on at first). Thanks for the help though. hopefully just a fluke thing.

DO have him re-check the coil. Many coils are sold for 12v applications.. and in the fine flyspec print, it says you need an external resistor.

A REAL 12v coil like a NAPA IC14SB needs no resistors. He may want to try that if this happens again.

dab, Sometimes even new or good things go bad but my first questions would be if the tractors 12 volts ????? ????? ????? ??

And if so, is the coil a 6 volt coil or a 12 volt coil thats labeled "12 volts for use with an external ballast resistor" cuz if its a 12 volt tractor and its either of the 2 coils above, it probably overheated. A 12 volt tractor requires either a true full 12 volt rated internally ballasted coil but if its a 6 volt coil or one labeled "12 volts requires external ballast" THEN IT NEEDS THE EXTERNAL SERIES VOLTAGE DROPPING (12 to 6) BALLST RESISTOR OR SHE OVERHEATS plus the points burn up prematurely.

Left the switch on, points were closed, the oil boiled = busted case.

I"ll add to that: "Espcially if it was a 6 volt coil on a 12 volt system"
