Blue Smoke...again

Took my 1956 Case out for its weekly exercise but instead of my usual level route, I turned left and went downhill. She decided to throw out a good deal of blue smoke out the exhaust when I eased off the throttle and coast downhill.

She clears up right away when I lay on the pedal and climbs the upgrades no problem with no smoke.

Question: Where is the oil coming through ? I just had a complete valve and head rebuild. Compression is okay and uniform in all four cylinders, but not great.

Also, I get treated to a single loud backfire exactly 6 seconds after each shut down. Her way I saying good night, I guess.

Any ideas out there appreciated.

Thanks guys. \ Gotta love the old junkers. Come to think of it, all the old relics I had oozed some smoke on the downgrades too., but I never cared.
And their leaky seals never bothered me either. Funny that as I age (I'm now 56), these things now get to me. I was told that many cars from the 50's would leak oil soon after rolling off the assembly line anyway.

We'll all getting tooooo oo precise maybe in this computer age. Still, nothing beats a clean running machine-just need time and a little money....

One of the ways we could tell our old cars were getting worn rings was to see blue smoke going downhill or near the bottom of a long grade that'd clear up on the flat or upgrade. Something about going downhill, backing off the gas, pulls oil into the comb chambers, yet on the flats there's no smoke at all (our old junkers usually leaked so much out of worn seals we could only tell they were burning oil when they smoked or fouled plugs!!).

The loud bang is caused by: When you shut off the ignition and the engine is coasting to a stop it is still pumping the fuel and air through it. A hot spot in the exhaust is what sets it off. The time delay is the "settle and mix" time. I had a twin cylinder briggs that did that. I put a solonoid in the intake that opened when the key was turned off and let enough air in the engine to make it to lean to burn. Worked. Darn thing always made me jump even when I expected the boom.

The later model Onan gen-sets have a solonoid on the main jet to cut the fuel off on shutdown partly because of this problem.

Let me guess, all you did was the head right?? If thats all you did then you are on the way to blowing the rings out the bottom and thats where the oil is comeing from. Engines wear pretty much to same top and bottom and if you do a valve job but not the rings you add more stress to the rings and they will not last long after doing the valves. If your going to work on an engine do it all or not at all or you will just have more problems.

Old,

Yes...I tried to get away with just the top end (head) rebuild. I had my fingers crossed and was in denial about the rings being okay & left to their own devices, but I guess your right. Thanks for the reality check.
She only started smoking like this after several hours into running with the new head.

Someone else on YT warned me to do the whole engine at once. Shoulda coulda..... ...

In the meantime, I'll nurse her along and keep her on level ground until my motivation and cooler weather returns. Too hot and humid here in CT to be pulling engines. I don't know how you southern people cope with constant heat but it sure is an inspiration. Kestrel in CT

Another stop gap fix and it will not hurt any thing is use say a 40W or 50W oil in the engine. That will slow down the smoke/burning and as long as its hot out will not hurt anything. Shoot I use 40W or 50W in almost all my tractors other then the one or 2 I se in the winter
