This place has more "Rare" tractors than I have ever seen anywhere: The "Awsome, rare 8N", with trencher, wheel weights, and Sherman transmission (how many Sherman's can one 8N have?) It looks nice, trhe seat is the wrong color, although ya don't see many with weights, I could scare up 3 or 4 sets tomorrow, who want's to beat up their N with a trencher, and while ya don't exactly trip over Shermans, they are actually quite common; I have 2 sitting on the shelf waiting for a tractor to be put in, and ine in our 2N...$6500????? I personally am offended by the rare tag, I have taken the time to learn a little about old iron, and like most of you guys, I pretty much don't need to be told what is rare! Our D10 Series 3 AC for instance, I would term uncommon at the most, but geez, compared to that 8N it'sabout a rare as they come huh?

I beleave you will find that rare means infrequently occuring, uncommon, excellent, extraordinary. I beleave it's all in how something looks to each of us and just because we see it as rare or beleave it to be rare doesn't make it rare. I really don't think it makes two hoots unless someone is trying to profit. Example of rare, my wife tells me all the time I'm a rare breed and I'm sure she means excellent' extraordinary, but then again my X said I was rare too. ( LOL ) Now here is something to think about. What about when someone says, that or it use to be rare. Tell me something and I'll say Ok, prove it to me with facts then I'll beleave it and except it but I try not to let it get to me unless someone is trying to profit. Just my opinion and my 1-1/2 cents.

Pete, relax a bit. If someone wants to call their tractor rare, then let them call it rare. What difference does it really make to you (or me for that matter)? It's like a lady who someone says is beautiful and you think she's just a plain Jane. No big deal, so he thinks she's beautiful (or rare), no harm done.

i have some rare tractors and i have some orphan rare as in we crossbred to get them for instance our super c dsl, super c with dsl motor from a 340 utility. sh-ta simply a super h sheetmetel on a 300. both are good conversation peices , how about a factory narrow front ih 966 black stripe, came from factory with air cond cab, i took vcab off to put in new ta and put fenders back on it, or a black stripe 1066 high clear, counting the one my wife bought last fall ive seen 1. remember beauty is in the eye of the beholder, how many 330 jds have been copied useing a 320 and a 430?
i know of a super m dsl ta highcrop selling for a good bit over 60000 bucks it was a 560 high crop with a md motor and sheetmetel, so i guess it was rare

Believe that "awsome" (or perhaps, "awesome") turns me off more than "rare". The most overused word on the planet these days, and mostly used by ninnies. IMHO.

No, lately "correct" is the most overused term and seems to be giving me a little trouble. Seems to work with old cars but with tractors "correct" is whatever worked in a given application and to heck with the factory. I would hate to see some of the farmer add-ons stripped from old tractors just to make them "correct". Take half the fun out of it.

Pete: I think most of these folks with rare tractors have had a rather sheltered upbringing. Probably never been more than 100 miles from home in their lives.

Now, the guy with the 8N must be a special case, his family must have him tied with a 50' rope to a 100' pulley clothsline.

It"s like saying an "old" Oliver. Yep, they are all about 40 years or more by now! Well, any pre-war tractor will be "old" as well, but they still tell you! Probably means they have nothing to add apart from the obvious or sensational, or are trying to appear naive to a naive buyer. Lets face it, to many these days, 5 years is old; or they don"t realise things could be repaired, rather than discarded for a new model (like mobile phones?)

Now to the statistics - which are "lies, damn lies or worse" - how many have you actually seen with that precise combination of parts with a seat that is the wrong colour (sorry - that particular shade of wrong colour)? Not many, I would wager. So the advertiser is right.

Now to the terminolgy; "rare" is prolly used as the vocabulary is a bit stinted, or it is all relative to something that is "common". A million in a billion could be considered as rare as one in a thousand. Ratios, not actual numbers. Statistics again, I s"pose. "Awesome" - a bit OTT, but maybe he thinks it is?
Ah well, we will just have to put up with them, I daresay. They will not change. All we can do is ignore them and, of course, buyer beware!
Regards, RAB
