When my '45 A is not running you can spin the fan. Why? I have never seen that on the B's i used to have. The gov gear does slide back and forth a little. I checked my parts tractor and it does the same. I even went as far as to remove the gov assembly from the parts tractor to assess what is up. Got Me? The keeper ring is still on the shaft. I see that when you move the throtle lever in the fast position that it puts pressure against the gear and keeps it in contact. Do I need to dig in or can I let it slide?
Thanks to all for the help!

It should take a good bit of pressure to turn the fan blade if you have the friction disk set up (with the spring up front) unless it's worn out.

Hey Mark before you run it any more, check that nut on the end of the shaft, the one between the fan and radiator. The kotter key may have sheared or been left out and the nut is coming off the shaft and letting it do what John said. We know what happens next if it comes off, new fan and radiator.
Just found one of my D's with the nut only 3 threads left on, ouch!! and dern lucky on that one

Mark, This IS NOT an area Im into very much but is it ONLY the fan blade turning or is the whole fan shaft turning????? I ask cuz theres a spring loaded friction disk out at the fan and if those discs are shot the fan blade isnt tight to the shaft. If its anything else Im "Out to Lunch" on this one.
