Hi,

I am looking to buy an older tractor for around the house. I would like to use it for gardning, mowing grass, hauling fire wood and other small chores. Having a bucket on it would be a great toy but not necessary. I like the size of the Farmall Cubs but don't know about thier reliability. I understant that the cylinders are not sleeved on the Farmall Cubs but I don't know if I should be concerned about it. Another issue is not having a three point hitch. Without a three point hitch am I limiting myself to a few implaments and can I find the implaments for a Farmall cub. I am looking to spend about $2000.

Any help out there will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Ed S.

What type of gardening? Cultivating? The Cub will cultivate 1 36-40" row but the other tractors mentioned will not.

Just about anything BUT a Ford N tractor! Like a later model Ford that has all the N problems fixed.

I bought a Fergy TE-20 for about $750 a few years ago. Does almost everything I need it to do and has not cost me hardly anything to keep running. The little Fords cost more. Why I don"t have a clue. The Fergy is just as nice and many parts interchange with the Fords.

One factor you need to keep in mind is - how close are you to a dealership that will take care of you if you need parts or service you can't do yourself? That might determine the brand for you!

$2000 can buy you a good little tractor, but likley not more than something pretty basic. You seem to want something small, and that's fine...but smaller does NOT mean cheaper. An old Farmall Cub that's in good shape will give you many hours of work. An International Super A has more power, and won't take up much more space. $2000 may not find a real good one in many parts of the country.

I've got nothing against the Ford models, but if you're looking for something that big, a few more $$ can get you an Interantional utility model (300, 350, or some newer ones) that will probably have live hydraulics and pto, and are nearly indestructible. Massey Ferguson put out some tough utility models in the early to mid-70s, also.

Ratch, Cubs are great little tractors, but their usage is pretty much limited to mowing and cultivating. Putting too much of a load behind one of these, especially in hilly ground, could be an accident waiting to happen. Although I'm not a big fan of theirs, an N series Ford or TO series Massey would suit your needs much better. No PS, but w/ 3 pt hitch. I'd also look at a WD or D-14 Allis, with a 3 point conversion of course. I'd rather have a tractor that's just a little bit too big for the job, as one that's too small. Just my $.02. Good luck.

If small size is important I agree with the others about the N series. They are limited in their enemities but other more modern utilties will easily run over the $2000 mark. As a hobby or odd job tractor they fit the bill.

The Cub is a good little tractor but its quite limited in its abilities (only 10-12hp or so) and its impliments are Cub specific.

If you had the room a 300, 350, 400, 450 IH makes a great tractor with live PTO and live hydraulics and good power. They can be had for the same prices as a N but are "full sized" row crops.

The best choice for what you are describing is a 9n ford. Has the simpler back brake setup than the 8n and has the same motor. Or a 2n would be good. Find one for two grand, use it twenty years and sell it for two grand or more. They are a great choice. Also the market is flooded with replacement parts for them and they also fit in sheds that don't have a tall entrance door. Good luck.

I have a 2N at my home and an 8N on my farm and I prefer the 8N brakes much better than the 2N or 9N brake set-up, it is impossible to use the left brake and depress the clutch with the same foot at the same time, both are on the left. 8N is a better set up with clutch operated by left foot and both brakes operated by right foot , together or separately for good turns. Fords are easy to find parts for and to repair. Only drawback I have is no live clutch.

You might look for one of the new old cub low boys since they did have a 3 point but you probably will not find one for $2000 unless it needs a lot of work. You also might think about a Ford 8N the side mount distubutor type is a little better he the earlyer 9N,2N and 8Ns. But again you might be getting higher then your $2000. Other ones to think about would be an Allis WD which could have a 3 point conversion on it and that would come in below your $2000 most of the time but its also might be to big for what you want. Just start looking around a lot and go in to every tractor dealer you can find and look around, not saying to buy from dealer but most have a few older tractors on hand so at least you can have a good look see and maybe find about what you want then just start looking at auctions etc.

I would go with an 8N. 9N and 2N are great, but the 8n will have a bit more power, position control, and (if you get a 1950, 51, or 52) a side mount distributor. Depending on where you are located, you can get these tractors for under your $2000 and maybe an implement or 2.
