I was traveling down the road with my tractor on my trailer minding my own business. All at once the trailer brakes locked up. This got my attention and every one else around me real fast. When the smoke cleared I was blocking my lane. In a short time I was able to pull the trailer off to the side of the road to let cars pass. After I sat there a short time the trailer was able to move but pulled a little hard. By time I got home it pulled ok. I had no idea what happened until I found the pin pulled out of the brakeaway switch. I guess it got tangeled up in the hitch some how and pulled out 1/2 way and fell out going down the road. Now one more thing to worry about. will it happen again? Has anyone else had this happen? Stan

Was with my broyher-in-law taking his travel trailer back to the dealer started around a corner and the trailer breaks locked up. The cable got tangled in the sway bar and pulled the pin. Blocked the corner for a minute or two while we figured out what was going on.

Had the drawbar come away from the truck coming up the M5 Motorway in England some years ago. Luck made it go up the shoulder and not in to the overtaking lanes, could have been nasty a 4 wheel trailer with a set of spring tine stubble cultivators making its own way!

In England chains are not permitted, a trailer with a gross wieght of more than 750kg capable of travelling at more than 40kmh must have a device that will cause the brakes to be applied if the trailer comes disconnected at the drawbar, this is usually a thin wire about 1/8" that will yank the trailer parking brake on then break allowing the trailer to come to a standstill rather than having a trailer flailing about on the end of a chain which can cause the towing vechcle to go out of control. The safty brake wire was attached to the drawbar frame, I lost the drawbar frame so the brakes were never applied! The trailer ended up on the hard shoulder of the M5 Motorway in Worcestershire still coupled to the hitch! I was wery lucky that day that the trailer went up the nearside, Britins roads are very overcrowded and there were 3 lanes of traffic all doing 70mph and then some. I live in New Zealand now, very much less busy!

I live in New Zealand now, they have safty chains here, coupled to the drawbar frame, I lost the drawbar frame, result would have been the same.

We have to use breakaway devices here In the US.. AND chains.

I'd MUCH rather have the trailer chained to my truck. If you have enough tow vehicle to haul a trailer.. thent he safety chains should keep it coupled, and i don't see it flailing around wildly... I've seen plenty of truck pull over with chains draggind a trailer.. and no loss of life and very little property damage. Vs what would have happened if the trailer brok free and locked up brakes.. perhaps cutting across 4 lanes of roads... i see some loss of life occouring there. Still the breakaway device is a good last resort.. but to outlaw safety chains? I think that is a step backwars in safety evoloution... Of course.. i need to keep in mind.. this is from the place that outlaws firearms for personal self defense by law abiding citizens.. er.. subjects..... gotta keep it all in perspective I guess...
