Any easy way to fix scratches in a hydraulic shaft? I have four or five scratches in a hydraulic shaft that will not allow the seal to set. Is there any product I can put on the saft and smooth with emory cloth?

The shop is wanting over $200 to fix it and $350 for a new one.

If it is a spinning shaft.. and the scratch is across where the seal rides.. use a sleave.

if it is a hy piston.. braze or silver solder it up, then polish down with a file then emeory cloth, then super fine sand paper.. perhaps then rubbing compound. This works for gouges too.. though I try to file gouges out to match contour of the shaft.. then fill em up. You will find that silver solder is easier to apply and remove than brass.. yet should hold up reasonable well to the seal / wipes.

Boy, I dunno Dug,

Guess I disagree with everybody.

Takes one heck of a scratch to leak. Now, gouges will run oil out on ya a little.

I overhauled a cylinder this morning that was bent down and to the left like an old man. While I had it apart, I put the goffy thing in the hydraulic press and bent it every which way until I got the ram reasonably straight.

Point being, I left jack dings, flat spots and "tracks" all over that silly ram. Hooked 'er up and it doesn't seep a drop.

Is yours so bad that it actually leaks? Or, are ya putting the seals in backwards? They can only go one direction.

Hey Allan,

It is the hydraulic cylinder that runs the grapple on my F 11. I the seal and took it in to the shop to have a new seal installed. They pointed out the scratches and made a couple of estimates on fixing or replacing. I told them to just put it back together and I would live with a little leaking. The scratches are in the middle of the shaft, so it should seal when fully extended or retracted.

I bought some 60/40 acid core today and plan on giving it a try in the morning. Hoping I won't screw the whole thing up beyond repair. I have a way of doing that! : -)

I have had fair luck filling the scratches with 60/40 acid core solder and using emery tape to level the solder with the shaft. The solder is hard enough to take the seal friction and will wear for a long time. make sure the scratch is clean and shiny so the solder will stick.
