I have had a Yanmar 2000 for about ten years. It recently needed a starter celenoid so I went to pull start it. It drug the wheals or one turned counter. What do I not understand here?

Hold the compression release open, put it in 6th or 7th gear, set throttle about 1/2. Give the wife a nod of the head, and brace for whiplash. When rolling ease out on the clutch. Once the engine is spinning (watch the fan) let go of the compression release lever and it will fire right up.

For tractors, always use the highest gear for tow starting- or for rolling it down a hill to start. If one wheel is going forward and the other backward, the engine is not turning.

The engine never budged. Just a thought but could the starter have been stuck engaged locking the driveline?

The tractor is too light, the compression is to high. The engine wont turn over without the compression release lever open.

Try putting in high gear to turn over easier. Don't worry if the one side turns backward, it's just that wheel is slipping and the the other is pulling. That would be normal if the differential is working right. Soon as it starts, put the clutch in. Hope you aren't trying to start it without someone on it to put the clutch in.

What gear were you using? It will do that if you use a low gear. I usually use the second highest.

I would assume you popped the clutch when it was in motion already right? You didn't try to drag it in gear from the start.

Gord: I popped the clutch in 2nd,4th and 6th. Then I went to pavement and let it out slow. I hit the brakes both sides one at a time. checked the dif lock. Thought I misdiognosed, pulled the starter and turned the engine easy. Got the solonoid in the mail in two days, put it in and away we go. The tractor is a pure gear drive.
