I like to view the ads and forums daily but there is so much static on the line that dial up is a disaster. I know that there are other methods of internet service that are reasonable. Help me out here.

Toby

We have Roadrunner, theres nothing faster "Beep-Beep". Things got tight last year after baby was born so we switched back to dial up to save money. That didnt last long. Once you have you cant live without it, so we decided to starve the kids (haha!) and switched back and love it. We could get DSL but because we live out in the county, in order to make it work to advertised speed you need the booster which brings the cost up to about the same as cable, and cable is already twice as fast as DSL, so why bother.

Dial-up blows!! Even where the phone service is decent. Where I am the phone company thinks that if it is good enough for voice, it is good enough for data, which it isnt. Half the time I couldn't get on and even when I did, half those times I got kicked off, to say nothing about the painfully slow downloads of today's graphics-heavy web sites. I use cable broadband, and wouldn't go any other way. If you have cable in your area, you should look into it.

We went wireless braodband last fall and it is great.

The advantage with it is the local company offers a 56K dial-up for back up. It was down quite a bit this winter for reasons that really weren't the local companies fault and they didn't charge us while it was down. I was still getting my 56K (which out here is usually 21,600) dial up and didn't have to pay.

I really love the wireless. I also put in a router that allows us to be on-line with the computer in the other room and my lap top all at the same time.

Did I mention that I really love the wireless broadband.

That's good to know. I just bought a sprint ppc-6700 pda phone with the unlimited data transfer. It allows me to "tether" the phone to my main computer as "phone as modem". I have'nt done that yet, but will soon to see how well it works for me. It too has a dial up back up. Cool thing is it can carry a 2 gig memory card.Sort of like a laptop, but without the size.

Another satellite system is Wild Blue and it is cheaper, about 49.00 a month. I have it as my only option is dial up or satellite and I am very pleased.

We only have 2 choices.

1. Dial Up

2. Satellite

We picked satellite. The bad part is it is very expensive and when bad weather comes it dosent work very well. But the Dial up service we can get is extremly slow. I think its slower than dial up. (thats pretty darn slow) So we went with satellite.

There's a fourth choice, depending on where you live. We're too far out for either cable or DSL, (southeast of Denver, CO) but have Wireless Broadband. Cost is comparable to DSL, ours is $39.95/month for 1 megabit service, including equipment lease (nothing to buy up front). We had a similar service when we lived in California. Monthly access was a little cheaper but you had to buy the equipment up front.

These systems us a dish about the size of a direct broadcast TV dish, except that its pointed at a tower somewhere rather than at a satellite. Ours has worked much more reliably than what I hear about DSL from various friends.

Do an internet search on "wireless broadband" or "motorola canopy" (the equipment everybody seems to use), & see if there's anything in your area.

Good luck,

Keith

Three choices:
1. DSL - uses same wires as your phone line. If it is "static", DSL may not work. Minimally, you would need to check availability for your phone number. Check on web site for whoever is providing your local service.

2. Roadrunner provided by the cable companies. If you have cable service for your TV, this an option (available without TV service but why would anyone do that?). You can also get local and long distance phone service from your cable company.

3. Satelite service from Dish Network and Direct TV. last time I checked though, this was very expensive.

If you can get reliable DSL, most companies offer intro rates for first year that compete favorably with dial up.

Good luck..... ..... ..

Know the feeling. I'm stuck with dial-up or have to go to wireless which is quite a bit more expensive than what I have. I have a fit getting online and the same staying on. I keep getting kicked of and have to start all over. even got a seperate line.

I am surrounded in the middle of nowhere all farmland, and about 1 year ago we could finally get dsl through verizon. 14.99 a month way faster than dial up. I love it, not as good as cable internet, but not bad.
