I cleaned off the engine pad on my 1950 Farmall Cub the other day and it is stamped with "FCUBM". What does the "M" on the end mean?

Another question: Whenever the cub is moving it makes a sort of grinding noise. I think it's coming from the transmission, not the drop axles, and it does get louder when it comes under a load. Any idea what this could be and how would I fix it?

Long-distance diagnosis is mostly guesswork, but from what you've said, I'd figure one or more bad bearings. Have you checked the grease in the transmission...or drained and refilled, looking for metal pieces?

I drained about 2/3 of the fluid out of the transmission 2 days ago and replaced it with new 80w90. The old lube was kinda' yellow, but I didn't see any metal.

I do not have all the details here at the moment. The "M" does mean that the engine was destined for a tractor rather than a baler or a boat. Those applications used different letters.
